A gas explosion in Ghislenghien (Belgium, July 2004) instantly killed five firefighters, one police officer and 18 civilians. Moreover, 132 people were wounded and many of them suffered severe burn injuries. This book aims at clarifying the impact of a technological disaster, both phenomenologically and empirically. It also wishes to enhance the understanding of the challenges for psychological help in the wake of technological disaster. On the phenomenological side, the experiences of a disaster survivor are used to set the stage for a discussion on the conceptual differences between mainstream (Anglo-Saxon) trauma theories and the more classical (French) psychodynamic theories. The Man Who Thought He Was Napoleon

By investigating nineteenth-century medical cases and doctors' observations, this book attempts to understand how political events such as revolutions and the rise of new systems of government affect mental health and/or can be represented as delirious in psychiatric and literary discourses. Rather than denouncing wrongful confinements, this book analyzes what is at stake in the intertwined discourses of madness, psychiatry, and political theory.

Emergency Psychiatry and Mental Health Policy

Hardbound. The provision of health services does not appear to meet the needs of the population and it is clear that strategies implemented by the majority of countries healthcare systems are not offering adequate solutions to deal with the problem facing modern societies today. Thus, Emergency Psychiatry and Mental Health Policy, an international perspective on emergency psychiatry will fill the need. This volume testifies to the rich experiences acquired and the increase in the specific interventions and the techniques required to treat psychiatric problems. Emergency Psychiatry and Mental Health Policy reveals the methological and ideolog

The present book presents a comprehensive review of Human Herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infects up to 90% of the world’s population and can cause potentially life-threatening diseases. Clinicians typically do not search for HHV-6, and if they do, they will find only few laboratories providing the necessary diagnostic tests that can differentiate between active and latent infection. Adding to this problem is that scientists still disagree about whether serological or molecular assays will be the best diagnostic test, yet there is no disagreement about the inadequacy of many of the currently existing assays. Consequently, our knowledge of etiology and pathogenesis of HHV-6 associated diseases can only come from the combined efforts of clinicians, virologists, molecular biologists and pathologists. It is the prime task of this book to summarize the status quo of HHV-6 research and to further stimulate such a collaboration. It will be a valuable reference for both clinical and basic scientists including epidemiologists, virologists, practicing clinicians and infectiologists, pathologists and essentially all scientists entering the field of herpes virus research.

Emergency Psychiatry in a Changing World

Hardbound. Emergency Psychiatry in a Changing World is a compilation of selected topics presented at the 5th World Congress of the International Association for Emergency Psychiatry held on October 1998 in Belgium. This volume discusses the dramatic increase in the number of emergencies and crisis situations in recent decades especially in general hospitals of large cities. It has been found that most psychiatric emergencies are triggered by mental breakdown of patients suffering from various psychiatric disorders caused by a series of crisis situations that have to do with familial, social and psychosocial problems. The psychiatric staff is faced with a situation where they have to set up adequate care structures to deal with these new problems. Drug addicts, homeless persons, victims of macrosocial disasters (earthquakes, plane crashes, terrorist attacks, civil wars), and the daily victims of violence (muggings, holdup, rapes) are few
