"Michael Marcus takes us on a wild adventure through the darkest depths of addiction, sexuality, deceit, and depravity with a raw grace and eloquence that brings to mind the voices of Jim Carroll in THE BASKETBALL DIARIES, Irvine Welsh in TRAINSPOTTING, Denis Johnson in JESUS' SON, and Junot Diaz in DROWN. Not for a moment do we question our narrator's truth as he depicts larger-than-life characters who are in a constant struggle to survive. "Marcus has an engaging voice as an author that is matched by his raucous humor. To read #1 SON is an experience of monumental proportions. A powerful, fresh new voice has taken center stage on the literary scene." --Jon Hess, from his introduction

Marguerite Duras is France's best-known and most controversial contemporary woman writer. Duras' influence extends from her early novels of the 1950's to her radically innovative experimental autobiographical text of the 1980's The Lover Leslie Hill's book throws new light on Duras' relationship to feminism, psychoanalysis, sexuality, literature, film, politics, and the media. Feted by Kristeva, and Laca who claimed her as almost his other self, Duras is revealed to be a profoundly transgressive thinker and artist. It will be a must for all concerned with contemporary writing, writing by women, recent European cinema, film and literature.

International Perspectives of Crime Prevention 3

The German Congress on Crime Prevention (GCOCP) is an annual event that takes place since 1995 in different German cities and targets all areas of crime prevention. Since its foundation the GCOCP has been open to an international audience with a growing number of non-German speaking participants joining. For non-German guests this event offers lectures in English language as well as other activities within the GCOCP that are translated simultaneously. This book reflects the input and output of the 3rd Annual International Forum 2009 which took place 8th and 9th of June 2009 in Hanover (state of Lower Saxony). This book contains lectures of the GCOCP and AIF as well as a contribution from a partner organisation of the congress. The articles reflect worldwide views on crime prevention and criminal policy as well as the current status, discussion, research and projects in crime prevention from different countries, Europe and the world. This volume arose from a European Scientific Seminar on `Strategies and Policies to Combat Drugs', which was organized by the Commission of the European Communities at the European University Institute in Florence in December 1993. The significance of the seminar lay in the manner in which it sought to address the full range of issues associated with the drug problem at international, national and local level. Equally important was its success in attracting participants from a number of different disciplines -- scientific experts, national and EU administrators working in the drugs field, and members of the European Parliament. That provided for a lively and wide-ranging exchange of views and ideas which is reflected in the contributions and conclusions contained in this publication, which comprises varied contributions and approaches to drug policies at international, European, national and local level. It also focuses on the possibilities of a comprehensive Drug Strategy within the framework of the European Union.
