Circa 1950-60's fictional tale spun around the true-life memoir of the author's moving and cathartic journey as she chronicles her mother Cynthia's illicit affair with Laurence, her best friend Anna's husband. In painful, but sometimes humorous recollection, she gives an account of the lover's 3000-mile desperate run with Laurence's abducted twin sons, Cynthia's two children, and their lovechild. The escape from New York to California offers them a new beginning, where they assume the identity of Reverend and Mrs. Laurence Greene-and despite the hypocrisy, the Reverend rules his house with a twisted fanatical iron fist.

American While Black

At the same time that the Civil Rights Movement brought increasing opportunities for blacks, the United States liberalized its immigration policy. While the broadening of the United States's borders to non-European immigrants fits with a black political agenda of social justice, recent waves of immigration have presented a dilemma for blacks, prompting ambivalent or even negative attitudes toward migrants. What has an expanded immigration regime meant for how blacks express national attachment? In this book, Niambi Michele Carter argues that immigration, both historically and in the contemporary moment, has served as a reminder of the limited inclusion of African Americans in the body politi...

“I would regard myself as a feminist writer, because I’m a feminist in everything else and one can’t compartmentalise these things in one’s life.” (Angela Carter) “When I became a feminist in 1968, I felt that I’d come home: the first home I ever had that was feminine. And it was very wild and theatrical and erotic, the early feminism.” (Michèle Roberts) Angela Carter and Michèle Roberts share a keen interest in gender and sexual identity, but many of their topics seem to mark them as opposites: Roberts’s fascination with the impact of religion, motherhood and autobiography on female identity covers areas that Carter shuns in her writings. In reading these two authors par...

"Call me Chick. I've been called Chick since I was six years old. If you call me Donald, I'll know you don't know me. In this story, I'll tell you how my life unfolded over the last eight decades: how I got that nickname; how I met and married the most beautiful girl in the world; and how I came to own and operate S & R sawmills in Surrey, British Columbia. By the end of this book, I'm pretty sure you'll know me well enough to call me Chick." --Chapter One Chick grew up on a chicken farm in Fort Rouge, Manitoba. It was the Great Depression and money was always tight, so he began his entrepreneurial career early, peddling eggs to the neighbours, jockeying for odd jobs and selling magazines. A...

Co. E was part of Symon's Regiment, 1st Regiment, and commanded by Angus Morrison, recently Ordinary of our county. They went by rail from Thomasville to the sand walled artillery fort on the Great Ogeechee, protecting a vital railroad bridge, just upriver, from federal gunboats. Under the higher command of Gen. Lafayette McLaws and the post command of Major Anderson of nearby Lebanon Plantation, they faced Sherman's huge well armed forces who needed to punch through to obtain supplies from the federal fleet. Co. E had 47 men on duty when Sherman's much larger force attacked late on Dec. 13, 1864.
