The Unconcerned Photographer
Charles Harbutt (1935-2015) was a master photographer and educator. His clear, pointed words from a 1970 lecture- published here in its entirety for the first time-will resonate with and challenge audiences considering the medium today: "Photography is not art. It is something totally new in human experience, something humans have not been able to do until the last century or so. Like flying. Or blowing up the whole world (I hope we survive our inventive little minds). The basic impulse of the photographer is diametrically opposed to the basic impulse of the artist, no matter what the artist's medium. The artist is trying to bring into existence something (even if only a concept) that never existed before. The photographer is trying to preserve, with the lens and especially the shutter, something in reality that will cease to exist in just that way in the next moment, or hour, or day.-Charles Harbutt
It's Raining ... I Love You
This co-authored book of early self-portraits by two professional photographers celebrates love-first love, an enduring friendship that resulted, and a lifelong devotion to photography as a form of creative expression. The black and white photographs in the book are drawn from the summer of 1999-when Prince told us to party, computer scientists feared global shutdown, and the seismic changes in communication that arrived with widespread use of the internet had not yet occurred. Jenny Riffle and Molly Landreth, home from their first year at separate colleges, documented the precious and banal moments of early adulthood as they explored their surroundings, and each other, through photography. Presented along with selected correspondence from the remainder of their college years, the photographs are a testament to the power of enduring friendship, and the creative spirits of two unique yet complementary artists.
David Hilliard
David Hilliard’s vibrant color photographs, usually triptychs or larger compositions, present elaborate narratives exploring a range of themes and situations, from the awkwardness of adolescence to masculinity disarmed. Formally, these staged photographs share the style of contemporary photographers like Gregory Crewdson and Anna Gaskell, among others. Yet Hilliard draws less from the realm of the fantastic and instead looks to his immediate surroundings to draw inspiration, as he deftly fuses autobiography with fiction to engage a host of complex ideas. This lush monograph is the first major publication of Hilliard’s work. Included are works from the artist’s ongoing series of his father that demonstrate Hilliard’s ability to tangle fact with fiction as the resulting images, underscored by the artist’s wry outlook on the world, convey a distinct poignancy. Other works engage issues of intimacy, homoeroticism, and identity. The resulting scenes are as often elegiac as they are comical, always orchestrated with precision, and with a marriage of form and content that work together to immerse the viewer in the visual narrative.

Public, Private, Secret
Public, Private, Secret explores the roles that photography and video play in the crafting of identity, and the reconfiguration of social conventions that define our public and private selves. This collection of essays, interviews, and reflections assesses how our image-making and consumption patterns are embedded and implicated in a wider matrix of online behavior and social codes, which in turn give images a life of their own. Within this context, our visual creations and online activities blur and remove conventional separations between public and private (and sometimes secret) expression. The writings address the various disruptions, resistances, and subversions that artists propose to the limited versions of race, gender, sexuality, and autonomy that populate mainstream popular culture. They anticipate a future for our image-world rich with diversity and alterity, one that can be shaped and influenced by the agency of self-representation.
Water for Tears
Joan Liftin's third monograph, Water for Tears , is a lyrical memoir. The book is about family and trips, about running away and coming back, short texts and photographs about pleasure in the newness of everyday life. There are layered images from everywhere, like the blind woman feeling her way by a timeworn splattered wall in Mexico or the teenage boys posing with a head of Reagan in the Soviet Union in 1988, while the darkest ones are from the American South's brutality during the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement. Her observations are mysterious, sensuous and often very funny. At the heart of the book is a tender farewell to her life with Charlie, Magnum photographer Charles Harbutt. There are no captions or dates, except in the back of the book, but you know where you are - you are with Joan.
Prizmism
Over the last eight years Joseph Park has inserted a radical chapter to the timeless tradition of oil painting. Inspired by a J.G. Ballard story, and a tongue-in-cheek attitude toward the art's world's predilection for defined historical movements, Park developed an adjustable, custom-made easel, began studying fractals, crystal formation theory, and the permeating reality of pixels today, and from those elements formed Prizmism. Drawing inspiration from his painterly ancestors, as well as photography and sculpture, he has explored Prizmism through portraits, figures and a completed cycle shown at Elizabeth Leach Gallery in 2012 that is dazzling in its narrative, color, and surface. This is the first major monograph of Park's paintings, and focuses solely on this innovative endeavor.
A Time of Youth
A Time of Youth brings together 89 of the more than 2000 photographs William Gedney took in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood between October, 1966 and January, 1967, documenting the restless and intertwined lives of the disenchanted youth who flocked to what became the epicenter of 1960s counterculture.
