The presence of heavy metals such as Cr(VI) in the aquatic environment and their harmful effects on living organisms has emerged as one of the most serious environmental concerns world-wide. This book reports the technical feasibility of coconut shell waste, a low cost material from local agricultural waste, as well as zeolite, an inexpensive natural material for treatment of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater. The book contains insightful and novel ideas on how solid waste, an unused resource available in large quantities from local coconut industries, is able to be chemically modified in such a way that it could be further used as a low cost material adsorbent to remove toxic Cr(VI) from contaminated wastewater, thus improving environmental protection in the aquatic environment.

Chelating agents are in widespread use in technical and industrial applications. They are used extensively to control metal speciation in the pulp and paper industry, in photographical processes, in cooling waters, the oil industry, and in the nuclear industry. Further, they are incorporated into industrial and household cleaners, personal care products, and foodstuffs. As a result of such extensive use, anthropogenic chelating agents are ubiquitous in the environment. Due to their strong interactions with metals they have received considerable attention due to the potential for adverse effects on ecosystems and health. The goal of this book is to bring together researchers from a variety of...

The Circular Economy

The Circular Economy: Case Studies about the Transition from the Linear Economy explores examples of the circular economy in action. Unlike other books that provide narrow perceptions of wide-ranging and highly interconnected paradigms, such as supply chains, recycling, businesses models and waste management, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the circular economy from various perspectives. Its unique insights into the approaches, methods and tools that enable people to make the transformation to a circular economy show how recent research, trends and attitudes have moved beyond the "call to arms" approach to a level of maturity that requires sound scientific thinking.
