Duffy's War
The legendary "Fighting 69th" took part in five major engagements during World War I. It served in the front lines for almost 170 days, suffering hundreds killed and thousands wounded. This highly decorated unit was inspired by its chaplain, the famous Father Francis Duffy (whose statue stands in Times Square), and commanded by the future leader of the OSS (predecessor of the CIA), "Wild Bill" Donovan. One of its casualties was the poet Joyce Kilmer. Due in large part to the classic 1940 movie The Fighting 69th, starring James Cagney and Pat O'Brien (as Duffy), the unit still has strong name recognition. Hockey in Portland
Portland, Oregon, has an old and rich hockey tradition. The City of Roses was home to six professional hockey teams that took the ice in fi ve different leagues, including two major league clubs. It all started with the Rosebuds (1914-1918), who earned the distinction of being the fi rst United States-based team to compete for the Stanley Cup. The tradition continued with a second version of the Rosebuds (1925-1926), the original Buckaroos (1928-1931), a second version of the Buckaroos (1933-1941), the Eagles/Penguins (1944-1951), and the Western Hockey League (WHL) Buckaroos (1960-1974). The WHL Buckaroos won three Patrick Cup titles and iced several minor league hockey legends, including Gordon Fashoway, Guyle Fielder, Don Head, Andy Hebenton, Norm Johnson, Art Jones, Connie Madigan, and Bill Saunders. Several Hockey Hall of Famers--Tommy Dunderdale, George Hay, Dick Irvin, and Moose Johnson--also spent time on Portland teams.
Burrup Rock Art
At last! A book showcasing the Aboriginal rock art of Western Australia's Burrup Peninsula. Western Australia contains some of the oldest, most prolific, and most spectacular rock art in the world. Some of the art probably dates from about 40,000 years ago, and much dates from around the last ice age which peaked 20,000 years ago. On the Australian Heritage-listed Burrup Peninsula and surrounding islands there are an estimated one million motifs carved into the rocks. This lavishly illustrated 516-page book has more than 600 images of this amazing art.
Men Alone
This study examines masculinity and individualism in four American novels of the 1920s and 1930s usually regarded as belonging to the genre of hard-boiled fiction. The novels under study are Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy, and To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway. In this first full-length study of gender in hard-boiled fiction the genre is discussed as a representation of the ideologies of masculinity and individualism. Hard-boiled fiction is located in its historical and cultural context and it is argued that the genre, with its explicit emphasis on masculinity and masculine virtues, attempts to reaffirm a masculine order. The study argues that this emphasis is a counter-reaction to more general changes in the gender relations of the period. Indeed, hard-boiled fiction is argued to be an attempt to reconstruct a masculine identity based on anti-modern values generally accepted in the cultural context of the genre.
