Essentials of Sea Survival

Essentials of Sea Survival contains original scientific research and investigations from two internationally recognized experts on cold-water survival. In addition to having practical personal experience with cold water immersion, Frank Golden and Michael Tipton regularly lecture at various international conferences about water survival, and they are frequently called on for expert commentary on television and radio. The majority of books on this subject are personal survival accounts; few relate to scientific studies. This book is different: Using reader-friendly language, two leading environmental physiologists present the facts and dispel the myths of surviving a sea accident. The book, t...

Last Hope 3

"To everything comes a season; a time to live, a time to die." That is a paraphrase from the Bible. It fits this particular journal more than any of the others. I was thinking of using a line from an old country song; "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em." Both of these literary truths fit our particular predicament. Our little community has some serious choices to make! If you remember from the last journal, we are facing an amazing number of growlers. They are streaming their way out of Kansas (or at least what we used to call Kansas). The growlers were now directed by controllers; those who give the orders to the mass. They have left the roads; now spreading out over the prairie. They have upped the ante by being able to run, though not what you would call gracefully any. They don't get tired so this makes them even more dangerous than we ever could have imagined or wanted to! We had fallen head first into the shit-pile; I had no idea what the hell to do at the moment!

“We are a group of survivors of a plague which destroyed civilization as we knew it. Those affected by the plague are now zombie-ish types, intent on our deaths. We have built a community, based on respect and dignity, where all have a voice, where all is shared. At first it was what we had to do but, became the way we do, because it works best that way. We have fought them several times and took large numbers of them out, yet, they still come, in even greater numbers.“This is not a world for the weak of heart. All has changed, and we find that we also have changed. No longer are we just a collection of survivors, but a true family. Dedicated to each other with bonds built strong with th...

Growing Old, Going Cold

What is it about freezing cold water that draws people in? Throughout history, humans have gravitated to cold water swimming and celebrated its healing properties, calling it the secret to good health and serenity. Today, cold water swimmers gather in groups from Galway to Georgian Bay to jump into frigid waters for fun, competition, and even as a form of activism and protest. Kathleen McDonnell started swimming in Lake Ontario, infamous for its chilly depths, because it was close to home. As time went on she began to rely on a daily dip, even breaking through winter ice to raise her spirits and refresh her body. In this wide-ranging memoir, McDonnell shares her love of cold water swimming and the lessons she has learned from a slow and steady commitment to the waves.

Thermal Physiology

This edited volume records the critical historical developments in thermal physiology and makes them accessible to new and senior thermal biologists and scientists in related fields. Readers will discover how the discipline developed all over the world. Contributions from 14 different countries recollect all prominent discoveries, starting in the 18th century. Like other volumes of the Perspectives in Physiology series, this book reveals the people behind these discoveries. The authors also set the scenes in which the research was conducted in their countries. From geopolitical frameworks to new technologies and extraordinary personalities - this volume shows that scientific progress is influenced by many, often unforeseeable, factors. The history of thermal physiology not only is a story about individual outstanding scientists, but a testament for open collaboration and international comradery.

Consultant eye surgeon, Eric Arnott, was one of the original pioneers of small-incision surgery. He was the first to perform modern Phaco surgery in Europe and designed lens implants that have restored the sight to millions of patients. The word autobiography is simply insufficient to describe this book, which is a remarkable testament to the life, works and marriage of a remarkable man. The book details the original invention of the lens implant by Harold Ridley, who Eric worked with in his early years of medical training. It goes on to follow the development of small-incision Phaco surgery, instigated by Charlie Kelman, and the disinterest and contempt held by the peers of these ophthalmol...
