The book's epicentre is early modern French culture, but it extends to that culture's ancient Greek and Roman models, its European contexts, and the afterlives of some of its themes, from Pascal via George Eliot to Angela Carter."

This new volume of Yale French Studies both honors and adds to Edwin M. Duval's scholarship on the history and development of French Renaissance literature. Edwin (Ned) M. Duval's scholarship focuses on teasing out hidden structures and symmetries in the poetry and prose of the French Renaissance, a period when literature underwent radical changes. In honor of Duval's literary "sleuthing," the contributors in this issue explore the symmetries, as well as the dissymmetries, the fragility, ambiguities, and contradictions of French Renaissance literary production. This volume addresses evolving literary practices, innovations in genre, and intellectual developments in sixteenth-century France.
Anthologies of Historiographical Speeches from Antiquity to Early Modern Times
Anthologies of speeches excerpted from history books constitute a relatively little-known rhetorical and bibliographic genre. From ancient times to the present day, the practice of culling characters’ orations from one or more works and publishing them independently of their original source has produced new and different ways of reading and using history. Anthologies of Historiographical Speeches offers an introduction to the very diverse questions that arise from the study of the genre through a variety of approaches and methodological tools. Lying at the point where rhetoric and historiography intersect, the essays included in this volume focus on the rhetorical aspects of the collections, as well as on their production, transmission, and reception from antiquity to the early modern period.

Printers were powerful figures in the creation of early modern books: they determined the physical appearance of books, changed content, and even altered or eliminated the name of the author to suit their own commercial and cultural interests. These interventions encouraged the birth of modern notions of authorship, for they compelled writers, editors, and printers to confront questions of textual ownership and authority. In the publication of female authors, however, book producers had to grapple with new concerns about authority and value since female authors were few and far between and their appeal was far from guaranteed. Certainly, the novelty of female authors could represent both an economic and cultural niche for the enterprising printer, but that same novelty in a culture unaccustomed to women's literary production was also a risky investment.

Cette nouvelle bibliographie donne la liste de tous les exemplaires de toutes les éditions des oeuvres de Rabelais parues avant 1626 et que l'on a pu repérer. Sont étudiés aussi les ouvrages édités par Rabelais et les ouvrages proto-rabelaisien ou apocryphes. Chacune de ces 148 éditions (identifiées et décrites selon les normes de la bibliographie dite "anglo-saxonne") est étudiée en détail. L'importance de chaque édition pour la transmission, le développement et la corruption des textes rabelaisiens est mise en relief. C'est à partir de ce travail qu'une nouvelle édition critique de textes de Rabelais sera établie. A l'aide cette bibliographie il est enfin possible de comprendre d'une façon plus sûre le destin de Rabelais, de ses oeuvres, et la création des légendes au sujet de Maistre François.

Winner of the 2022 SCSC Bainton Prize for Reference Works A Companion to François Rabelais offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of the works of François Rabelais, one of the most influential writers of the Western literary tradition. A monk, medical doctor, translator and editor, Rabelais embodies the ideals of Renaissance humanism. His genre-bending fiction combines vast erudition, comic verve, and critical observations of all spheres of contemporary life that are relevant to this day. Two sections of this volume situate Rabelais’s work in the larger social, political, and literary context of his time. A third section gives concise interpretations of each of the five books of the Pantagrueline Chronicles. The contributors are eminent scholars of early modern literature. Charting Change in France Around 1540
During the decade or so surrounding 1540, there is a change in French thinkers' assumptions about themselves, their country, and their place in the world. This evolutionary change is examined from multidisciplinary points of view, providing readers with tools for interpreting, defining, and understanding it in a broader sense. The character of the change being explored here is neither rupture nor revolution. It is a displacement of center that contributes to, or in some cases actually creates, a changed relation between past and mid-sixteenth-century present as well as between that present and attitudes toward the future. During the period around 1540, French thinkers and French perceptions opened to the notion that what-had-never-been now could be, what for lack of a better term, called the new, often accompanied by a nationalism proclaiming it for France. This brings a fresh understanding of what it means to be French - in language, in music, even in food. It brings an expansion of categories to be treated as part of the French economy, like Canadian fish, or more surprisingly, leisure, or music. The Golden Mean of Languages
In The Golden Mean of Languages, Alisa van de Haar sheds new light on the debates regarding the form and status of the vernacular in the early modern Low Countries, where both Dutch and French were local tongues. The fascination with the history, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary of Dutch and French has been studied mainly from monolingual perspectives tracing the development towards modern Dutch or French. Van de Haar shows that the discussions on these languages were rooted in multilingual environments, in particular in French schools, Calvinist churches, printing houses, and chambers of rhetoric. The proposals that were formulated there to forge Dutch and French into useful forms were not directed solely at uniformization but were much more diverse.

En analysant le “dessin” du Tiers Livre - sa composition formelle aussi bien que son intention sous-jacente - E. Duval dégage la cohérence profonde d'une œuvre qui passe le plus souvent pour ambiguë et “ménippéenne”. Cette cohérence, qui se manifeste simultanément à deux niveaux (celui du dessin de Pantagruel dans la quête, celui du dessin de Rabelais dans son livre), permet à l'auteur non seulement de résoudre plusieurs apories de la critique rabelaisienne, mais de découvrir dans le Tiers Livre des dimensions et des ironies inaperçues jusqu'à présent.
