This volume contains papers selected for presentation during the 24th Interna tional Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science held on September 6-10, 1999 in Szklarska Por^ba, Poland. The symposium, organized alternately in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland, focuses on theoretical aspects and mathematical foundations of computer science. The scientific program of the symposium consists of five invited talks given by Martin Dyer, Dexter Kozen, Giovanni Manzini, Sergio Rajsbaum, and Mads Tofte, and 37 accepted papers chosen out of 68 submissions. The volume contains all accepted contributed papers, and three invited papers. The contributed papers have been selected for ...

This timely text/reference presents a detailed introduction to the essential aspects of computer network forensics. The book considers not only how to uncover information hidden in email messages, web pages and web servers, but also what this reveals about the functioning of the Internet and its core protocols. This, in turn, enables the identification of shortcomings and highlights where improvements can be made for a more secure network. Topics and features: provides learning objectives in every chapter, and review questions throughout the book to test understanding; introduces the basic concepts of network process models, network forensics frameworks and network forensics tools; discusses various techniques for the acquisition of packets in a network forensics system, network forensics analysis, and attribution in network forensics; examines a range of advanced topics, including botnet, smartphone, and cloud forensics; reviews a number of freely available tools for performing forensic activities.

The Chinese HEART in a Cognitive Perspective

This book is a cognitive semantic study of the Chinese conceptualization of the heart, traditionally seen as the central faculty of cognition. The Chinese word xin, which primarily denotes the heart organ, covers the meanings of both "heart" and "mind" as understood in English, which upholds a heart-head dichotomy. In contrast to the Western dualist view, Chinese takes on a more holistic view that sees the heart as the center of both emotions and thought. The contrast characterizes two cultural traditions that have developed different conceptualizations of person, self, and agent of cognition. The concept of "heart" lies at the core of Chinese thought and medicine, and its importance to Chin...

System Engineering Analysis, Design, and Development

Praise for the first edition: “This excellent text will be useful to everysystem engineer (SE) regardless of the domain. It covers ALLrelevant SE material and does so in a very clear, methodicalfashion. The breadth and depth of the author's presentation ofSE principles and practices is outstanding.” –Philip Allen This textbook presents a comprehensive, step-by-step guide toSystem Engineering analysis, design, and development via anintegrated set of concepts, principles, practices, andmethodologies. The methods presented in this text apply to any typeof human system -- small, medium, and large organizational systemsand system development projects delivering engineered systems orservices...

Enabling Optical Internet with Advanced Network Technologies

This book provides a broad overview of IP over WDM technologies, as seen by a group of experts participating in the e-Photon/ONeC and BONE Networks of Excellence funded within the VIth and VIIth Research Framework Programmes (FP6 and FP7) of the European Union. Both Networks of Excellence are aimed at the integration of research teams active on optical networks at a pan-European level, with the creation of virtual centers of excellence in optical networks, te- nologies, and services. The working groups on optical core networks gathered about a 100 researchers from more than 20 universities and research institutions in Europe. The multifaceted viewpoints available in this community on the cur...

Choucas

The novel in Europe in the early twentieth century took a decidedly inward turn, and Choucas (1927) is an intriguing example of the modernist psychological tradition. Its author, Zofia Nalkowska (1884–1954), was a celebrated Polish novelist and playwright. She rose to prominence in interwar Poland and was one of a group of early feminist writers that included Pola Gojawiczynska, Maria Dabrowska, and Maria Kuncewiczowa. Choucas is set in the Swiss Alps in the mid-1920s in a sanatoria village near Lake Geneva. The book has an international focus, and the narrator, a polish woman, profiles a motley collection of visitors to the village and patients at the sanatorium and their interactions wit...

Hybrid Graph Theory and Network Analysis

Hybrid Graph Theory and Network Analysis

This book combines traditional graph theory with the matroid view of graphs in order to throw light on the mathematical approach to network analysis. The authors examine in detail two dual structures associated with a graph, namely circuits and cutsets. These are strongly dependent on one another and together constitute a third, hybrid, vertex-independent structure called a graphoid, whose study is here termed hybrid graph theory. This approach has particular relevance for network analysis. The first account of the subject in book form, the text includes many new results as well as the synthesizing and reworking of much research done over the past thirty years (historically, the study of hybrid aspects of graphs owes much to the foundational work of Japanese researchers). This work will be regarded as the definitive account of the subject, suitable for all working in theoretical network analysis: mathematicians, computer scientists or electrical engineers.
