The Politics of Bangsa Malaysia: Nation-Building in a Multiethnic Society (UUM Press)
The politics of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysia. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence generate a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis and later in the post 2008 General Election), the project of nation-building remains a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. The book explores the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or ‘a united Malaysian nation’ enshrined in Mahathir’s Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. It discusses the underlying socio-political parameters that shape and influence the politics of nation-building in the country and the construction of Bangsa Malaysia. As such, the book provides an alternative perspective in the analysis of ethnic relations and nation-building in Malaysia, thus broadens the understanding of Malaysian politics and society.

Buku ini dibahagikan kepada enam bab kesemuanya. Bab pertama berkisar daripada era pemerintahan Sultan Ahmad Tajudin Halim Shah II, iaitu sebelum tahun 1804. Bab dua membicarakan peristiwa-peristiwa penting semasa era Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah (1804-1845) dan Sultan Zainal Rashid Muazzam Shah (1845-1854). Perbincangan dalam Bab ini dimulai dengan catatan perlantikan Duta Kedah ke Siam. Bab tiga mencatatkan peristiwa-peristiwa penting semasa pemerintahan Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Shah (1845-1879). Bab ini dimulai dengan kisah baginda menaiki takhta Kedah sebagai Sultan Kedah yang ke 24. Bab empat merupakan bab yang terpanjang di dalam buku ini kerana iamencatatkan kisah-kisah di zaman pemerintahan Sultan Abdul Halim Shah (1882-1943). Bab lima mencatatkan sejarah pemerintahan Sultan Badlishah (1943-1958) yang agak singkat tetapi ketika itulah berlaku pelbagai peristiwa penting ke arah kemerdekaan Tanah Melayu. Bab enam merupa kan bab yang terakhir yang menceritakan tentang pemerintahan negeri Kedah di bawah sultannya yang ke 28, Al Haj Tuanku Abdul Halim Mua’adzam Shah yang menaiki takhta pada 20 Februari 1959.

Buku ini disusun berdasarkan dua wawancara bersama Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad pada tahun 2010 dan 2019. Kedua wawancara tersebut sangatlah penting dalam konteks politik dan sosial bagi masyarakat Malaysia. Pertama, wawancara ini merupakan pengamatan Mahathir mengenai politik dan masyarakat Malaysia, ketika ia pensiun dari dunia politik pada tahun 2010, dan ketika kembali terjun sebagai Perdana Menteri pada tahun 2019.
