Drawing on autoethnographic research on literacy autobiographies from a Chinese EFL writing context, this book provides unique insights into literacy, voice, translingualism, and critical pedagogy from a Global South perspective. The book presents literacy autobiographies as a cultural tool for analyzing and refashioning learners’ and teachers’ sense of self in ever expanding dialogical spaces. In addition to highlighting teachers’ own stories around autoethnographies and translanguaging, it showcases literacy autobiographies from Chinese students themselves. The book theorizes the Global South as an ontological positioning that challenges colonial mindsets and practices concerning literacy, language learning, and narratives. It argues that literacy autobiographies from a Global South perspective can be reimagined as critical pedagogy for EFL writing teaching and learning, as well as teacher development. Validating and expanding student voices by presenting these literacy autobiographies, this book will be of great interest to researchers and students in the fields of TESOL, applied linguistics, English language teaching, second language writing, and literacy studies.

The COVID-19 pandemic had numerous negative effects on many aspects of life. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the psychosocial, educational, and economic impacts of the pandemic worldwide. It includes thirty-two chapters that highlight the importance of analyzing, evaluating, and carrying out appropriate treatments to prevent the mental and social consequences of the pandemic. Topics addressed include the psychological impacts of COVID-19 on different groups of people, including students, healthcare professionals, disadvantaged groups, and others; the educational impacts of COVID-19 on students, educators, students with disabilities, doctors, and so on; and the economic impacts of COVID-19 on managers, employees, residential care homes, and other businesses worldwide.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused tremendous loss of human life and disruption of normal daily activities across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic can be traumatic and have short-term and long-term influences on individual behaviors and well-being. To contain and control the spread of COVID-19, various public health and social measures (e.g., social distancing, quarantine, isolation, and extensive lockdown of cities) have been implemented in countries worldwide. With such social and environmental changes, the prolonged feelings of fear, worry, stress, and the lack of social activities and interaction may greatly increase the prevalence of mental health issues (e.g., anxiety and depression). Nowadays, Internet has permeated into everyone’s life, which may play an increasingly important role in coping with COVID-19 related stress and anxiety. However, the increasing reliance on the Internet may lead to problematic Internet use (PIU), prolonged screen time, and sedentary lifestyles, and pose great risks to public health.

Following the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim nations have been placed in the spotlight of international debate; the prevailing understanding is that democracy and Islam are fundamentally incompatible. This verdict is particularly damning in light of the trend in International Law which, since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, has equated democracy with human rights. Yet, a thorough analysis of the debate, taking into account the historical and theoretical bases of liberal democracy the cultural, legal, and political development of Islam, and the extent to which the politics of Islamic countries represents the politics of Islam reveals that democracy and Islam are, in fact, fundamentally compatible. In practice, Islamic Law can be applied alongside developments in democratic representations and human rights.
