A Critique of the Origins of Islamic Economic Thought
The possible indebtedness of political economy to fourth-century Greek thinkers has been widely debated; the contribution of Islam, on the other hand, is consistently forgotten. This volume addresses this neglect by examining in three parts the following questions: Is there a school of economic thought that can be considered specifically 'Arab', or have the Arabs succeeded in combining the Greek heritage with other, more oriental currents? Muslim economic thought has enriched the Hellenic contribution to economic thought in the areas of government of the kingdom by the caliph, of the city and the household organisation; the Arab concept of tadbîr should be examined in relation to each of these three levels. In rejecting profit, usury, egoism and monopoly, and in preaching moderation, altruism, the practice of fair prices, and unselfishness, Islam inaugurated an 'economic system' which has derived from that of the Greeks and which laid the basis for pre-capitalist thought.
Two Mediterranean Worlds
Why are globalizing processes unevenly distributed between poor and wealthy countries? What effect do these disparities have on the lives of ordinary people? The contributors to this volume find answers to these questions in the Mediterranean, a region divided between the wealthier nations of the north shore and their poorer neighbours to the south. The divergent histories, economies, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, education systems, and political structures of these two regions lead to explanations not only for uneven globalization but also for the wave of demonstrations that have sparked unrest in North Africa and the Near East.

Globalization has challenged concepts such as local culture and cultural autonomy. And the rampant commodification of cultural products has challenged the way we define culture itself. Have these developments transformed the relationship between culture and autonomy? Have traditional notions of cultural autonomy been recast? This book showcases the work of scholars who employ a broad definition of culture to trace how issues of cultural autonomy have played out in various arenas, including literary criticism, indigenous societies, the Slow Food movement, and skateboarding culture. Although they focus on the marginalized issue of autonomy, they reveal that globalization has both limited as well as created new forms of cultural autonomy.

Deux méditerranées
En prenant la Méditerranée du Sud comme référence privilégiée pour une étude sur la mondialisation et l'autonomie, nous nous retrouvons face à des États qui ont connu la modernisation, mais pas la modernité : absence de société civile, attachement aux intérêts nationaux, permanence de l'idée de souveraineté et de frontières, survivance de gouvernement détenant le monopole de la violence rendue légitime. Ces pays se trouvent aujourd'hui tiraillés entre la recherche d'une plus grande autonomie, surtout culturelle, l'établissement d'une stratégie d'ancrage à une Europe de plus en plus frileuse et les effets dissolvants de la mondialisation. Il existe donc bien une problématique méditerranéenne opposant le Nord et le Sud par rapport à la mondialisation et à l'autonomie et c'est tout l'intérêt de cette contribution pluridisciplinaire. De nombreux spécialistes représentant divers pays méditerranéens et différents domaines du savoir livrent leur analyse sur la question : économie, histoire, littérature, science politique, musicologie, anthropologie alimentaire, islamologie et psychanalyse.
