Al estilo del prerromanticismo, narra los amores de dos jóvenes. El interés del texto, sin embargo, reside en el virulento y apasionado alegato en contra de la guerra, que puede interpretarse como una aparente crítica a la política de su hermano, aspecto éste sobre el que versa el estudio preliminar del profesor Dufour.
