In Following the Proper Channels: Tributaries in the Mekong Legal Regime, Bennett Bearden offers in-depth policy and legal analyses of the marginalization of tributaries in the context of the 1995 Agreement on the Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin, law of international watercourses, hydrosovereignty, and the national economic development interests of the Mekong riparians. As a problem-based study, enlightening conclusions are made based on the increasingly state-centric nature of water resources management in the Mekong region through pursuit of national agendas in the unilateral and bilateral development of tributaries. The overarching legal and hydropolicy issue is whether states can simultaneously pursue hydrosovereignty on tributaries and ensure the Mekong legal regime’s efficacy to achieve holistic water resources management and basin-wide governance.
Living with Transition in Laos
Laos - the Lao People's Democratic Republic - in one of the least understood and studied countries of Asia. Its development trajectory is also one of the most interesting, as it moves from state, or perhaps more appropriately, subsistence, to market, at the same time as finding itself in a key geographical position in the fast-changing southeast Asian region, where, with boundaries more permeable, and new patterns of spatial integration forming, a new Greater Mekong sub-region is emerging. Based on extensive original research, this book, unlike others on Laos which concentrate on the macroeconomic picture, assesses how economic transition and marketization are being translated into progress (or not) at the local level, and at the resulting impact on poverty, inequality and livelihoods. It concludes that the process of transition in fact contributes to the growth of poverty for some people, and shows how people manage to cope in very unfavorable circumstances.

As an important aspect of human polity, the concept of security has an important place and space in politics. Though regularly mentioned or referred, the concept is rarely given a proper definition, usually left in the shadows of politics and policymaking and usually referred as a cause to an effect. Within the framework of this book, classic, modern and post-modern security issues are analyzed, while also focusing on the classical and diverse conceptual dimensions of security, current problems are also evaluated, especially in the axis of post-modern security studies. Polycentric Water Governance in Spain
Increasing irrigation efficiency has been high on the political agenda in Spain for many years. However, the overarching aim to reduce agricultural water consumption has not been met so far. To explore this phenomenon, Nora Schütze investigates processes of coordination between the water and agricultural sector in three Spanish river basins in the context of the EU Water Framework Directive implementation. From the perspective of polycentric governance, she identifies multiple mechanisms which illustrate how and why actors interact in certain ways, and thus shows why environmental aims of the Water Framework Directive remain unachieved.
