Rationales Shaping International Linkages in Higher Education
This qualitative case study examines the rationales of the relationship between Arizona State University (ASU)--an American public research university--and Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM), a Mexican private not for profit research university. The focus of the study is to document the different meanings participants attached to the rationales of this international inter-university relationship. The conceptual framework draws from internationalization of higher education and interpretive policy analysis literature. Qualitative methodologies were utilized in both data collection and analysis. Data consisted of institutional policy documents, a ranking survey, and semi-structured interviews with faculty, administrators, and senior leadership from both universities.

En el contexto actual cada vez más globalizado la interacción y la interconexión entre instituciones son tendencias clave en la educación superior en todo el mundo, de ahí que sea necesario analizar la internacionalización universitaria en un entorno cada vez más cambiante y complejo. Estamos experimentando una época de alto dinamismo en educación, de fuerzas que pudieran parecer contradictorias: por una parte en la región de América del Norte tenemos cambios en materia de política pública para facilitar componentes clave en la internacionalización como son la innovación, la investigación y la movilidad estudiantil, mientras que, por otra, hay una reducción progresiva y generalizada en el mundo del financiamiento público destinado a la educación terciaria, a la vez que en América Latina siguen creciendo la población estudiantil que aspira a este nivel de estudios.
Transnational Alliances in Higher Education
Hana Fehrenbach’s book examines organizational level transnational strategic alliances. Through the perspectives of dynamic capabilities and neo-institutionalism, the study explores the interplay of rationales, pathways and benefits of transnational alliances over time of leading universities of technology (TU9) in Germany. Complex inter-connected dynamics at the macro (i.e. society), meso (i.e. organization) and micro-levels (i.e. individual) are examined in this qualitative study driven by a deductive approach. These interrelated dynamics are then reflected in a recursive process model called STANCE, which depicts how through these types of alliances, institutions of higher education position themselves in single or multiple organizational fields to gain (more) strategic and social fitness. The study is timely, considering the paucity of comprehensive and theoretically anchored research on this contemporary phenomenon, and the need for policy-makers and senior leadership to make evidence-based decisions.
