Reflections on Postgraduate Supervision and Academic Development in an African Distance Education Environment

Within postgraduate studies, student non-completion, attrition, and failure rates range from 29% to 65%. These unacceptably high failure rates have been attributed to wide-ranging influences. Even so, there is consensus that postgraduate supervision represents a critical enabling vehicle for student success. Reflections on postgraduate supervision and academic development in an African distance education environment offers a collection of scholarly contributions that focus on critical questions related to the practice of postgraduate supervision, from the multiple perspectives of higher education institutions, postgraduate students, and supervisors. The inclusion of contributions from educators and learners in one manuscript makes this a unique text – one that should be the mainstay of any scholar engaged in postgraduate studies. The manuscript aptly makes the case for recognising that postgraduate preparation and supervision are the most critical contributing factors to the success of postgraduate learners, and by inference, they represent a significant panacea to many of Africa’s social and economic skills.

Applied Theatre: Ethics

"This volume explores what it means for applied theatre practice to be conducted in an ethical way and examines how this affects the work done with communities and participants. It considers how practitioners can effectively balance aesthetics and ethics in the process of creating performance, particularly with relatively inexperienced and often vulnerable groups of people who are being asked to both tell and stage their stories. While Part One offers an overview of critical debates and the editors' reflections on their own practice, Part Two presents a range of international case studies that explore how the theories and issues are worked out in a variety of diverse practices. The two secti...

ALL SHOOK UP

Kate’s mind was made up when she caught a wedding bouquet for the umpteenth time. The reason she was in her thirties and still single was because she hadn’t yet met Mr. Right. All she had to do is find one! Being a methodical science teacher, she decided to use her computer skills to find her future husband. She dated different men to gather data such as their age, occupation and physical traits. That’s when she met Jamie, who came to her summer school as a parent chaperone. At first sight, she sensed he was her ideal mate…but the computer program dismisses him as a nonviable candidate!

The aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of visual images in print texts produced for language teaching and learning. It tested the manner in which learners from different cultural contexts relate to selected visual images in language textbooks prepared for use in secondary schools. More specifically it aimed to gain clarity on how certain visual elements, relevant to the illustration of people, contribute to encouraging students to access their learning material. The research aimed to gain insight into the way in which visuals can be bridges or barriers to reading and thus also to learning in learner-centred language education in a multilingual/multicultural South African context.
