With the continued growth of PhD programs in architecture and the simultaneous broadening of approaches, InterVIEWS: Insights and Introspection on Doctoral Research in Architecture begins a timely survey into contemporary research at academic institutions internationally, in the context of the expanding landscape of architectural inquiry. The eighteen interviews with scholars who direct or contributed to doctoral research programs in areas of architecture history and theory, theory and criticism, design research, urban studies, cross-disciplinary research, and practice-based research expose a plurality of positions articulating a range of research tactics. Renowned scholars narrated the stor...

Theory by Design

As a result of the Bologna Process, the need to connect higher education with research has become an important issue. For a discipline such as architecture, this seems to put the traditional and well-established equilibrium between theory and praxis under pressure, or even under threat. Research is undertaken in order to construct knowledge through the acquisition of insight and understanding, with the aim of sharing the results. In architecture schools, design lies at the heart of the educational programme, with the design studio being the central locus. Since design and research are inextricably linked, the relationship between knowledge production and the design process has become a subject of investigation. The interweaving of research and design-based architectural education also affects the relationship between teaching and design. This book focuses explicitly on connections: the connections between the construction of knowledge and theory, teaching and learning, design and research.

Geographical Information System and Crime Mapping features a diverse array of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications in crime analysis, from general issues such as GIS as a communication process, interjurisdictional mapping and data sharing to specific applications in tracking serial killers and predicting violence-prone zones. It supports readers in developing and implementing crime mapping techniques. The distribution of crime is explained with reference to theories of human ecology, transport network, built environment, housing markets, and forms of urban management, including policing. Concepts are supported with relevant case studies and real-time crime data to illustrate conc...

The work of Vladimír Dedeček (born 1929) is considered as a prime example of an independent socialist version of the Modern style. His main commissions were prestigious buildings designed and built between the 1960s and 1980s. The most important of these are still being used as originally intended. The monograph consists of three parts - it explains the method of research and the concept of the book; it analyzes and interprets four buildings as examples: the Boarding School in Modra (1972-1978), the Slovak National Archive (1972-1983), the Supreme Court (1977-1990), and the Slovak National Gallery (1967-1979) and informs about another thirteen key buildings forming the basis of possible interpretations and is followed by the list of works, the bibliography, and the biographical details.

Geoinformatik
