In 1933, widowed Mattie Brinson Bragg arrived in Colorado Springs looking for opportunities for her seven children who were crowded midst all the family's worldly belongings in the back of their uncle's dust-covered, open-air truck. No one could ever have imagined that one of those youngsters from the backcountry of Depression-era Oklahoma would grow up to work for a Russian Count, pressure the city manager to give her a business license, persuade a wealthy white socialite to lend her $3000 for a business venture, and stand up to the admonitions of a tough police chief who warned her to stop "mixing colors," but that's exactly what happened. As a result, Fannie Mae Duncan peacefully integrated the city of Colorado Springs to the musical accompaniment of the top black artists of the day at her Cotton Club. Her formula for success? Book a Music Hall of Fame and make EVERYBODY WELCOME!

in the summer of 1893, a young professor named Katherine Lee Bates took a train west from Massachusetts to Colorado. On her trip, she saw the beauty and the grandeur of our nation - its mountains, fertile prairies, and shining seas - and was moved to compose a poem that would later be set to music and stir generations to come. Glowing paintings and lyrical text blend together to show the magnificence of the United States of America and how it inspired Katherine Lee Bates to pen the poem that would become our nation's unofficial anthem.

His faith in the United States government¿s plans and treaties was proved wrong again and again, and his attempts to protect his people¿s way of life failed. Even though he had many disappointments, Chief Little Raven tried to lead his people to live in harmony with white settlers. In his lifetime, he saw the end of a way of life for thousands of Arapaho who once camped near the place where the Cherry Creek and the South Platte River meet in today's Denver, Colorado. The "Great Lives in Colorado History" biography series is for grades 3-5. Each book contains full text in both English and Spanish.

The Challenge of Reducing Subsidies and Trade Barriers

"This is one of 10 studies for the Copenhagen Consensus Project that sought to evaluate the most feasible opportunities to improve welfare globally and alleviate poverty in developing countries. Anderson argues that phasing out distortionary government subsidies and barriers to international trade will yield an extraordinarily high benefit-cost ratio. A survey is provided of recent estimates using global economywide simulation models of the benefits of doing that by way of the current Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations. Even if adjustment costs are several times as large as suggested by available estimates, the benefit-cost ratio from seizing this opportunity exceeds 20. That is much higher than the rewards from regional or bilateral trade agreements or from providing preferential access for least-developed countries' exports to high-income countries. Such reform would simultaneously contribute to alleviating several of the other key challenges reflected in the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals"--Abstract.

Religion on Trial

The free exercise of conscience is under threat in the United States. Already the conservative bloc of the Supreme Court is reversing the progress of religious liberty that had been steadily advancing. And this danger will only increase if more conservative judges are nominated to the court. This is the impassioned argument of Religion on Trial. Against Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Chief Justice Rehnquist, the authors argue that what the First Amendment protects is the freedom of individual conviction, not the rights of sectarian majorities to inflict their values on others. Beginning with an analysis of the origins of the Constitution and then following the history of significant church-sta...
