The Implications of Freedom
The term 'NGO' is so widely used nowadays that it has effectively lost its meaning. Therefore, in order to put back flesh on what has become a very bare skeleton, this book attempts to portray a 'real' organization that originated during the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. By meticulously studying this land sector NGO over a prolonged period of time, much is revealed about its internal dynamics and the changing relationships with actors in the state, civil society and the market. This embedded tale (re-)introduces a historical, political and socio-economic dimension in the analysis of NGOs and shows that they are not as value-driven, autonomous, accountable and non-profit as is often claimed.
Mario Monti's Impossible Mission
For TIME magazine picturing an Italian guy on the front cover of its international edition, with no disparaging intentions, is a rare event by itself and one of great pride for us, who are the man’s fellow citizens. Our pleasure reaches the climax when we find out the person in the picture is our Premier and the caption is: Can this man save Europe? Mind you: Europe, not Italy, as one could expect. Under the conditions, writing about him, however shortly, becomes irresistible for a man, like me, who lives on bread and politics. Too bad that I am known to being frank. In fact my frankness obliges me to write that, in my modest opinion (and, to quote Winston Churchill, I have a lot to be modest about), the answer to TIME caption is: I wish he could. And that is why I am calling this essay: Mario Monti’s Impossible Mission.
The Letter
In The Letter, which is a follow up on the story of Tiena (her first published novel), Regina Oli Igbo has deftly indicated the possibility of successfully handling a crisis in the family within the confines of the family, even when the crisis is full of intricacies. It is encouraging to read through The Letter and feel Tiena's Practical Paradigm. The Letter manifests itself as a 'love story' ending with the renewed pledge of, "We fall in love once again... For ever and ever you are mine." The novel is also imbued with 'moral adjuncts'
'Onde Di Questo Mare'
In the half-century following Pavese's death, much that was written about him sought principally to understand and define his complex character, and to determine his place within the twentieth-century Italian literary canon. Latterly, there appears to have been a significant shift in focus towards a closer reading of individual works or aspects or periods of his writing, the better to analyse and reveal the subtleties and depth of his vision. This present collection of ten essays conforms broadly with this tendency. It is organised chronologically with regard to Pavese's life and works so as to convey a sense of the development of a writer, over and above the particular concerns of any given essay.
