This volume explores the production of knowledge of normativity in the age of early modern globalisation by looking at an extraordinarily pragmatic and normative book: Manual de Confessores, by the Spanish canon law professor Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586). Intertwining expertise, methods, and questions of legal history and book history, this book follows the actors and analyses the factors involved in the production, circulation, and use of the Manual, both in printed and manuscript forms, in the territories of the early modern Iberian Empires and of the Catholic Church. It convincingly illustrates the different dynamics related to the materiality of this object that contributed to “glocal” knowledge production. Books in the Catholic World during the Early Modern Period
The Reformation is often alluded to as Gutenberg’s child. Could it then be said that the Counter-Reformation was his step-child? The close relationship between the Reformation, the printing press and books has received extensive, historiographical attention, which is clearly justified; however, the links between books and the Catholic world have often been limited to a tale of censorship and repression. ¿Desde cuándo es posible hablar de mujeres en el mundo del libro? ¿Cómo la historia del libro latinoamericano ha narrado —o no— los aportes que ellas han hecho en el ámbito editorial? Durante siglos, las impresoras, editoras, tipógrafas, encuadernadoras y libreras han sido invisibilizadas o relegadas en los estudios sobre la edición. Esta obra, que reúne los trabajos de veintiocho investigadoras de distintas disciplinas, aborda casos, panoramas, problemas, metodologías y fuentes documentales, con el fin de valorar los diversos aspectos del papel que han tenido las mujeres en el mundo del libro en Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, España, Guatemala, México, Perú, República Dominicana y Uruguay, entre los siglos XVII y XXI. En el marco de este campo, aún reciente y poco explorado, Las mujeres y los estudios del libro y la edición en Iberoamérica establece una línea de investigación con la que se espera incentivar futuras historias del libro y la edición de Latinoamérica, en las que, de forma articulada y sistemática, las voces de las mujeres sean incluidas, visibilizadas e iluminadas.
