Sieg Heil!, first published in 1962, is the account of the life of Nazi-leader Adolf Hitler, written by Morris Waldman, a contemporary of Hitler and head of the American Jewish Committee until the war's end in 1945. The book begins with the story of Hitler's father, Alois Schicklgruber. Young Adolf's hatred for the man and his own unattractive appearance lead to his anti-social character that separated him from other people, an awkwardness in social situations, and a bitterness to those who rejected or ignored him. However, he possessed a shrewd, calculating nature and amazing skills in oration, and, as one of the original seven members of the National Socialist Party (Nazi), used these skills to build the organization into a powerful ruling group with millions of members. The book details events leading to the Second World War and describes his interactions with other leading Nazis such as Goering, Himmler and Goebbels. While not an exhaustive biography, the book offers numerous insights into Hitler's personality which help explain his decisions and their disastrous results.
While the massive flow of immigrants to the Northeast was taking place, a number of Jews were finding their way to America through the port of Galveston, Texas. The descendants of these immigrants, now scattered throughout the United States, are hardly aware that their ancestors participated in a unique attempt to organize and channel Jewish immigration. From their recruitment in Eastern Europe to their settlement in the American West, these immigrants were supervised by a network of agents and representatives. The project, known as the "Galveston Movement," brought over ten thousand Jews to the United States between the years 1907 and 1914. In Galveston: Ellis Island of the West, a thorough analysis of the various problems—promotional, organizational, political, ideological, anfinancial—besetting the Galveston Movement, and of the Movement's attempts to solve these problems, serves as the basis for an important case study of an experiment at channeling immigration. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Jews from Central and Eastern Europe arrived in New York City, where they did not only find a new home, but far away from their shtetl origin, the new members of the American society also began to politically radicalize. There has been a discussion in the literature related to the field, where, how, and why the Jewish population radicalized. This study analyses two waves of radicalization: one related to the American environment that is responsible for the described process at the end of the 19th century; one, related to the developments in Eastern Europe during the early decades of the 20th century. For both radicalization processes this book compares the reasons, elements, and aims of those who join radical movements to show that there is a transatlantic perspective that links both processes to each other.
In the aftermath of America's centennial celebrations of 1876, readers developed an appetite for chronicles of the nation's past. Born amid this national vogue, the field of American literary history was touted as the balm for numerous "ills"_from burgeon
American Jewish leaders, many of German extraction, created the Industrial Removal Office (IRO) in 1901 in order to disperse unemployed Jewish immigrants from New York City to smaller Jewish communities throughout the United States. The IRO was designed to help refugees from persecution in the Pale of Russia find jobs and community support and, secondarily, to reduce the Manhattan ghettoes and minimize antisemitism. In twenty-one years, the IRO distributed seventy-nine thousand East European Jews to over fifteen hundred cities and towns, including Chino, California; Des Moines, Iowa; and Pensacola, Florida. Wherever they went, these twice-displaced immigrants wrote letters to the IRO's main office. Robert A. Rockaway has selected, and translated from Yiddish, letters that describe the immigrants' new surroundings, work conditions, and living situations, as well as letters that give voice to typical tensions between the immigrants and their benefactors. Rockaway introduces the letters with an essay on conditions in the Pale and on early American Jewish attempts to assist emigrants.
