The Arab Spring took all of us by surprise. The questions we all have are how can such leaderless revolts, so different from others in the past, have arisen, why there, and why now. Johnny West is the perfect guide on this quest. Returning to countries in which he had lived years before, he travels by bus and communal taxi through the back streets and small towns, sits in houses and cafés, in offices and barber shops, a fly-on-the-wall observer of encounters and arguments; he talks to students and managers, to protestors and their families, to oil workers and clerics, to people and in places where none of the media have been. Through all the conversations across Libya, Tunisia and Egypt, the author draws us into an exhilarating portrait of unforgettable characters of the Arab Spring and shares with us how they see their future. Karama: Journeys through the Arab Spring makes you feel you are there, in those dusty streets, and that you understand why those thousands and thousands created the uprising.

Behaviour of Material and Composite Structures

Behaviour of Material and Composite Structures

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). Aerospace vehicle applications have always been at the cutting edge of structures and materials research because of the essential requirement for lightweight construction as well as the need to combine safety with performance. New advanced materials, such as composites with toughened thermosetting matrices, thermoplastic composites, and metal-matrix or ceramic-matrix composites, are constantly proposed. In addition to the ongoing challenge of developing new materials, many research issues remain open regarding conventional metallic aero-structures. These include life extension in aging aircraft, and proper methods of vibration control. These 19 peer-reviewed papers gather together the latest knowledge related to the “Behaviour of Material and Composite Structures” title of this volume.

Innovating Processes

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). Engineering design, whether applied to components, products, systems or processes, involves the development and application of technology and scientific knowledge to a complex multidisciplinary innovation process. Research in design methodology involves both the development of new engineering design methods and the study of the science of design methods and design practice. The present 18 peer-reviewed papers gather together the latest knowledge related to the “Innovating Processes” title of the volume.

Tribological Aspects in Modern Aircraft Industry

The main objectives of this special issue (consisting mainly of a selection of extended papers presented at 5th International Symposium on AirCraft Materials ACMA 2014) are to push the current limits in modeling and computation in response to industrial and society challenges. It is also to control the calculations and models in a framework that takes into account the major sources of uncertainty to optimize materials and structures. Particular attention is given to the modeling and validation of composite materials and structures.

Structural Analysis of Advanced Materials

The increased use of advanced materials in high efficiency structures – electronic devices, medical equipment, aircraft and vehicles – requires improved reliability, resistance to breakdown and improved failure and life-span forecasting for a wide range of loading conditions. The development of materials having advanced structural properties is becoming a key factor in industrial and technological progress.

Multi-Scales Behaviour of Materials

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). This volume focuses on the development of methods, for predicting the behaviour of materials, so as to be able to design materials having specific properties. This requires a multi-scale material modeling framework that is based upon the fundamental laws of physics and links the electronic modeling hierarchy all the way from the atomistic and mesoscale modeling regimes up to macroscopic material behaviour. It is evident that such a framework cannot be based upon rigid formal parameterizations alone, but must emerge from a detailed understanding of the mechanistic behaviour of materials, a profound knowledge of material properties and metallurgical trends, and must take account of the processing of materials as the basis of dynamic structure/property relationships.

Dynamics of the Structures and Non Destructive Testing

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). With energy costs increasing, the gains to be made from weight-saving are most significant in the aerospace domain, but such gains are clearly also advantageous for road transport and this is even beginning to be recognised in shipbuilding. Consequently, improved reliability and resistance to degradation and durability in severe environments are always important requirements. Thus the development of composites, nano-composites and refractory alloys having specific properties has become a key factor in industrial and technological progress. Another challenge is the recyclability of advanced materials, as reflected by the emergence of projects in...
