Designing Sustainable Cities in the Developing World

Can conservation of the built heritage be reconciled with the speed of urban change in cities of the developing world? What are the tools of sustainable design and how can communities participate in the design of the environments in which they live and work? These are some of the questions explored within this innovative and richly illustrated book. A wealth of examples drawn from Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India and Myanmar demonstrate how rapid physical and social change has swept away historic urban quarters and the cultural heritage they represent. Written in an accessible style the rich mix of concepts, research methods, analysis and practice-based tools is designed for academics and professionals alike. Leading academics Zetter and Watson have produced a fascinating book that is amongst the first to explore the concept of urban sustainability within the context of urban design in the developing world.

Refugee and Labour Movements in Sub-Saharan Africa

This report is the second of a series on emergencies and disaster relief published by the Swedish International Development Authority and the Nordic Africa Institute. It contains two papers that focus on some longer term impacts of refugee and migrant worker flows which have implications for the way humanitarian relief is conceptualised and planned. The first is an overview of migrant worker and refugee flows in Sub-Saharan Africa. It suggests that the negative impact of exporting male workers from rural households has been overemphasised. While there is psychological stress from family separations and the spread of Aids is associated with labour migration, such movements can also be viewed ...

In March 1938, Hitler easily moved his grand design by «annexing» Austria. This «bloodless» coup introduces one of history's most extravagant bloodlettings, the systematic extirpation of, among others, nearly the entirety of central and western Europe's Jewish population. Literally within moments of this Annexation, the contributors of this volume began sampling a foretaste of the horrors to come. Unlike most of those close to them, these lucky ones survived, escaping into a life of exile which eventually brought them, ironically, to the halls and classrooms of American university German departments. Here they have sought to make sense of the Holocaust and to contribute to the intellectual life of both adopted and lost homelands. The essays of this volume chronicle, in classically undramatic scholarly prose, the often terrifying dramatic events of their half-century hegira.

The Yearbook of International Organizations provides the most extensive coverage of non-profit international organizations currently available. Detailed profiles of international non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations (IGO), collected and documented by the Union of International Associations, can be found here. In addition to the history, aims and acitvities of international organizations, with their events, publications and contact details, the volumes of the Yearbook include networks between associations, biographies of key people involved and extensive statistical data. Volume 2 allows users to locate organizations by the country in which secretariats or members are located.
