Beatrice Forbes Manz uses the history of Iran under the Timurid ruler Shahrukh (1409–1447) to analyse the relationship between government and society in the medieval Middle East. She provides a rich portrait of Iranian society over an exceptionally broad spectrum - the dynasty and its servitors, city elite and provincial rulers, and the religious classes, both ulama' and Sufi. The work addresses two issues central to pre-modern Middle Eastern history: how a government without the monopoly of force controlled a heterogeneous society, and how a society with diffuse power structures remained stable over long periods. Written for an audience of students as well as scholars, this book provides a broad analysis of political dynamics in late medieval Iran and challenges much received wisdom about civil and military power, the relationship of government to society, and the interaction of religious figures with the ruling class.
This new view on aspects of the Ghaznavid and Seljuk dynasties concentrates on the relationship of the panegyric poets Farrukhi Sistani (c.995-1032) and Mu'izzi (c.1045-1127) to the Ghaznavid and Seljuk rulers and dignitaries for whom they wrote. Dr Tetley investigates the reliability of the historical information which may be gathered from the poems, and draws comparisons with other historical sources. A solid and impressive work of learning, of interest to scholars in Oriental Studies, Medieval Literature, and History, The Ghaznavid and Seljuk Turks: Poetry as a Source for Iranian History, is the first extended English study of Mu'izzi it presents much new material concerning both this little-studied poet and also the better-known Farrukhi. Additionally, there is a valuable exploration of the relationship between Persians and Turks, a highly significant factor during the rule of the two dynasties.

These two poems are genuine Acehnese. They are not translations or adaptations of foreign works of fiction, as many Acehnese literary products are, nor do they deal with fictitious events originating from the writer's romantic imagination. Both deal with actual life on Aceh itself and are illustrative of disruptive factors in nineteenth-century Acehnese society. As such they are of more than mere literary or linguistic concern. The first text, Hikajat Ranto, is a piece of social criticism. It offers a graphic description of the domestic discord which makes men seek their fortune among the pepper planters of the West Coast, where life is ungodly and unrestrained, and of various responses to their protracted absences on the part of the wives, children, and parents. The second text, Hikajat Teungku de Meuké', depicts the annoyance and political discord engendered by the high-handed proceedings of a religious leader, and the action taken against him by the secular powers, not without the blessing of the Dutch.
