In addition to offering a comprehensive overview and fair insight over more than twenty five years into the relations between two South Middle Powers, namely South Africa and Malaysia, this book also discusses them within their respective regional structures and evaluates their respective diplomatic and commercial connections. It also explores issues that have generally be neglected by International Relations specialists and, in this regard, it gives attention to cultural contacts that bring to the fore the critical role of non-state actors in international affairs. Since the ideas espoused by South Africa and Malaysia’s political leaders are rooted in their specific national and broad regional philosophies, the study also unpacks the notions of the ’African ways’ vis-à-vis the ‘Asian ways’ in maintaining and sustaining state-to-state relations within the two regions. This book, which uses Critical Theory as an appropriate framework that takes full cognisance of various developments in International Relations, will be of interest to scholars and researchers in both the Social Sciences and the Humanities.
The compositions brought together in this book began a quarter of a century ago in 1994, with the onset of South Africa’s non-racial democracy, and in one way it may be viewed as the critical observations of an organic intellectual’ engaging the exigencies of life during the first 25 years of South Africa’s democracy. The book’s compositions are presented in chronological order, so the reader is able to follow the ebb and flow of life in post-apartheid South Africa. It is also fitting that the book commences with an excellent sermon about the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) that was delivered at the Claremont Main Road Masjid (CMRM) in 1994, since the core of the compositions are sermons which were delivered here. These were all outstanding sermons, as those who witnessed their public performance can attest to. Their inclusion in this book thus provides a wonderful opportunity for a wider audience to benefit from Prof. Fataar’s profound insights.

The Arabic script in Africa contains sixteen papers on the past and present use of Arabic script to write African languages. These writing traditions, which are sometimes collectively referred to as Ajami, are discussed for single or multiple languages, with examples from all major linguistic phyla of Africa but one (Khoisan), and from all geographic areas of Africa (North, West, Central, East, and South Africa), as well as a paper on the Ajami heritage in the Americas. The papers analyze (ethno-) historical, literary, (socio-) linguistic, and in particular grammatological aspects of these previously understudied writing traditions and exemplify their range and scope, providing new data for the comparative study of writing systems, literacy in Africa, and the history of (Islam in) Africa.

This volume examines religiosity on university campuses in Sub-Saharan Africa.
