Africa and Urban Anthropology
This volume offers valuable anthropological insight into urban Africa, covering a range of cities across a continent that has become one of the fastest urbanizing geographic areas of the globe. Consideration is given to the structures, social formations, and rhythms that constitute the definition of an African city, town, or urban space, and to current concepts for thinking about African cities in the twenty-first century. The contributors examine topics including notions of belonging, the effects of globalization, colonialism, and transnationalism on African urban life, the cultural dimensions of infrastructure and public resources, mobility, labor issues, spatial organization, language, and popular culture trends, among other themes. The book reflects on how the ethnography of urban Africa fits within anthropology and urban studies, and on new theoretical concepts and methodologies that can be created through anthropological fieldwork in African cities. It will be of particular interest to scholars and students from anthropology, African studies and urban studies, as well as sociology and geography.
US Energy Tax Policy
The United States face enormous challenges in the energy area. Climate change, biofuels policy, energy security and environmental degradation are all intimately bound up with energy production and consumption. Historically, the federal government has relied on tax subsidies to effect energy policy. With mounting federal deficits, policymakers and advocates are increasingly calling for a rethinking of our energy tax policy. How can the federal tax code strengthen environmental policy and reduce security concerns in the area of energy? The authors tackle such difficult problems as climate change, efficient taxation of oil and gas, and optimal oil tax policy in a world with OPEC oil producers dominating world oil supply. Resource Alienation, Militarisation and Development
The third volume in a series of studies by the East Africn Drylands Research Programme, a collaborative project between the University of Bergen, Norway and OSSREA, presents research papers by fourteen social anthropologists from Ethiopia, Norway, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. the work, as a whole, exposes the internal dynamics of the volatile political climate which forms the context, first in the East African drylands generally, and more specifically in the Horn of Africa; and elucidates the close relations between the different areas of research. Individual papers address issues of topical interest, such as: nomadic education and the future of traditional pastoralism; resource alienation; militarisation of local conflicts; local institutions; knowledge in resource management and conflict resolution; land tenure; arms smuggling in the East African drylands, contraband trade; and food aid.
Climate Change
Elevated levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the resulting effects on the earth¿s climate could have significant environmental and economic impacts in the U.S. and internationally. Potential impacts include rising sea levels and a shift in the intensity and frequency of floods and storms. Proposed responses to climate change include adapting to the possible impacts by planning and improving protective infrastructure, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions directly through regulation or the promotion of low-emissions technologies.
