Based on an inter-American studies perspective, the case studies composing this volume look into the definition of the social, its traditional configurations and more recent reconfigurations in the wider context of the Americas. It also focuses on past and present crisis and social struggles alongside with the answers, movements, narratives and discourses of resistance they brought about. By exploring new territories, the present volume aims at contributing to the creation of a new grammar and pedagogy of the social deriving from epistemological and practical perspectives on the Americas. Unterdrückt, marginalisiert, exotisiert – Studentinnen indigener Herkunft werden mit zahlreichen diskriminierenden Heterostereotypen konfrontiert. Doch wie verstehen sie sich selbst? In ihren erzählten Lebensgeschichten stellen befragte Studentinnen indigener Herkunft sowohl erlebte Konflikte als auch ihren von Identifikationen und Widerständen geprägten Umgang damit auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise heraus. Was aber bedeutet Indigenität? Kann überhaupt von einer apriorischen ethnischen Identität ausgegangen werden? Wie werden Identitäten hergestellt oder zerstört? Die aufgeworfene Identitätsfrage führt direkt zum Kampfplatz, an dem über Fremd- und Selbstpositionierungen Bedeutungen und Machtverhältnisse ausgefochten werden. Die Autorin zeigt in ihrer qualitativen Analyse der biographischen Interviews mit Studentinnen indigener Herkunft aus Oaxaca/ Mexiko, dass der Begriff ‚Identität‘ in postmoderner Manier als unzulänglich betrachtet werden kann. Auf der Grundlage postkolonialer Theorien wird stattdessen ein Rahmen gesteckt, in dem sich die Frage nach der agency als wichtig herauskristallisiert.

En los diferentes capítulos de este libro, se analiza el lugar que ocupan las imágenes educativas en la construcción de las identidades, las relaciones sociales, y el sentido de la experiencia de la vida contemporánea.
