The You I've Never Known

How do you live your life if your past is based on a lie? Find out in this “satisfied and moving story” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) in both verse and prose from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins. For as long as she can remember, it’s been just Ariel and Dad. Ariel’s mom disappeared when she was a baby. Dad says home is wherever the two of them are, but Ariel is now seventeen and after years of new apartments, new schools, and new faces, all she wants is to put down some roots. Complicating things are Monica and Gabe, both of whom have stirred a different kind of desire. Maya’s a teenager who’s run from an abusive mother right into the arms of an older man...

Harnessing Useful Rhizosphere Microorganisms for Pathogen and Pest Biocontrol

Growing demographic trends require sustainable technologies to improve quality and yield of future food productions. However, there is uncertainty about plant protection strategies in many agro-ecosystems. Pests, diseases, and weeds are overwhelmingly controlled by chemicals which pose health risks and cause other undesirable effects. Therefore, an increasing concern on control measures emerged in recent years. Many chemicals became questioned with regard to their sustainability and are (or will be) banned. Alternative management tools are studied, relying on biological, and low impact solutions. This ResearchTopic concerns microbial biocontrol agents, root-associated microbiomes, and rhizosp...

Singularities in PDE and the Calculus of Variations

This book contains papers presented at the "Workshop on Singularities in PDE and the Calculus of Variations" at the CRM in July 2006. The main theme of the meeting was the formation of geometrical singularities in PDE problems with a variational formulation. These equations typically arise in some applications (to physics, engineering, or biology, for example) and their resolution often requires a combination of methods coming from areas such as functional and harmonic analysis, differential geometry and geometric measure theory. Among the PDE problems discussed were: the Cahn-Hilliard model of phase transitions and domain walls; vortices in Ginzburg-Landau type models for superconductivity and superfluidity; the Ohna-Kawasaki model for di-block copolymers; models of image enhancement; and Monge-Ampere functions. The articles give a sampling of problems and methods in this diverse area of mathematics, which touches a large part of modern mathematics and its applications.
