Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms. This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the...

Stray Radiation Measurements at Particle Accelerator Sites

The stray radiation field from high energy particle accelerators is comprised of several components, e.g., fast and thermal neutrons, x- and gamma rays, proton recoils, and at sufficiently high energies, heavy particle recoils and mesons. In order to determine permissible occupancy times for personnel in this radiation field, a measurement is required both of the intensity and the energy of the different components constituting the spectrum. Then, from biological or clinical experience concerning the relative effectiveness of different radiations in producing deleterious effects, the biological hazard may be inferred. This outlines very briefly the radiation problem with an accelerator in operation.

This unique and contemporary text not only offers an introduction to proofs with a view towards algebra and analysis, a standard fare for a transition course, but also presents practical skills for upper-level mathematics coursework and exposes undergraduate students to the context and culture of contemporary mathematics. The authors implement the practice recommended by the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) curriculum guide, that a modern mathematics program should include cognitive goals and offer a broad perspective of the discipline. Part I offers: An introduction to logic and set theory. Proof methods as a vehicle leading to topics useful for analysis, topolog...

Wavelet Transforms: Kith and Kin serves as an introduction to contemporary aspects of time-frequency analysis encompassing the theories of Fourier transforms, wavelet transforms and their respective offshoots. This book is the first of its kind totally devoted to the treatment of continuous signals and it systematically encompasses the theory of Fourier transforms, wavelet transforms, geometrical wavelet transforms and their ramifications. The authors intend to motivate and stimulate interest among mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and physical, chemical and biological scientists. The text is written from the ground up with target readers being senior undergraduate and first-yea...

The primary goal of this text is a practical one. Equipping students with enough knowledge and creating an independent research platform, the author strives to prepare students for professional careers. Providing students with a marketable skill set requires topics from many areas of optimization. The initial goal of this text is to develop a marketable skill set for mathematics majors as well as for students of engineering, computer science, economics, statistics, and business. Optimization reaches into many different fields. This text provides a balance where one is needed. Mathematics optimization books are often too heavy on theory without enough applications; texts aimed at business stu...

Structural Seismic Design Optimization and Earthquake Engineering: Formulations and Applications

Throughout the past few years, there has been extensive research done on structural design in terms of optimization methods or problem formulation. But, much of this attention has been on the linear elastic structural behavior, under static loading condition. Such a focus has left researchers scratching their heads as it has led to vulnerable structural configurations. What researchers have left out of the equation is the element of seismic loading. It is essential for researchers to take this into account in order to develop earthquake resistant real-world structures. Structural Seismic Design Optimization and Earthquake Engineering: Formulations and Applications focuses on the research aro...

Taking the “Oof!” Out of Proofs

This book introduces readers to the art of doing mathematical proofs. Proofs are the glue that holds mathematics together. They make connections between math concepts and show why things work the way they do. This book teaches the art of proofs using familiar high-school concepts, such as numbers, polynomials, functions, and trigonometry. It retells math as a story, where the next chapter follows from the previous one. Readers will see how various mathematical concepts are tied and will see that mathematics is not a pile of formulas and facts; rather, it has an orderly and beautiful edifice. The author begins with basic rules of logic and then progresses through the topics already familiar t...

Abstract Algebra: An Inquiry-Based Approach, Second Edition not only teaches abstract algebra, but also provides a deeper understanding of what mathematics is, how it is done, and how mathematicians think. The second edition of this unique, flexible approach builds on the success of the first edition. The authors offer an emphasis on active learning, helping students learn algebra by gradually building both their intuition and their ability to write coherent proofs in context. The goals for this text include: Allowing the flexibility to begin the course with either groups or rings. Introducing the ideas behind definitions and theorems to help students develop intuition. Helping students unde...

This book started as a collection of lecture notes for a course in differential equations taught by the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. To some extent, it is a result of collective insights given by almost every instructor who taught such a course over the last 15 years. Therefore, the material and its presentation covered in this book were practically tested for many years. This text is designed for a two-semester sophomore or junior level course in differential equations. It offers novel approaches in presentation and utilization of computer capabilities. This text intends to provide a solid background in differential equations for students majoring in a breadth of fie...

This book, for a first undergraduate course in Discrete Mathematics, systematically exploits the relationship between discrete mathematics and computer programming. Unlike most discrete mathematics texts focusing on one of the other, the book explores the rich and important connection between these two disciplines and shows how each discipline reinforces and enhances the other. The mathematics in the book is self-contained, requiring only a good background in precalculus and some mathematical maturity. New mathematical topics are introduced as needed. The coding language used is VBA Excel. The language is easy to learn, has intuitive commands, and the reader can develop interesting programs ...
