Annotation Describes the surface properties controlling the wear processes in different environments, and presents techniques for reducing specific type of wear through modification of surface properties. The author characterizes the energy, morphology, and composition of surfaces, then identifies the mechanisms of wear caused by adhesion, abrasion, erosion, corrosion, and heat. The main section of the book discusses the various surface protection technologies: strain hardening, thermally assisted diffusion processes, hardening by thermal treatment, thin film coatings, and thick film overlays. The final chapters address metal, plastic and ceramic composites that resist wear, and provide a wear diagnosis methodology. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR
Surface engineering was founded by detecting surface features which destroy most of pieces, e.g. abrasion, corrosion, fatigue, and disruption; then it was recognized, more than ever, that most technological advancements are constrained with surface requirements. Probably, the key importance of surface engineering is producing new materials, which are just resulted in advance coating. Though electronic and optical electronic apparatuses are sharp examples, but nowadays most of mechanic engineering blocks are included in this topic. This handbook includes new aspects of surface engineering regarding nanocoatings and biocoatings from their fabrication methods to properties and usages in five vo...
In this handbook and ready reference, the authors introduce the concept of plasma electrolysis, explaining how the coatings are characterized and discussing their mechanical and corrosion properties. They then go on to look at specific industrial applications of this powerful and low-cost method, including aerospace, the biomaterials industry as well as in the oil and gas industry.
Surfaces are the bounding faces of solids. The interaction of component surface with the working environment results in wear and corrosion. Estimated loss due to wear and corrosion in the USA is around $500 billion. Engineered surfaces are the key to the reduction of losses due to wear and corrosion. There are surface engineering books on specific processes such as thermal spraying and vapor phase deposition or about specific heat sources such as plasma or laser. However, there are few, if any, covering the whole range of advanced surface engineering processes. Advanced Thermally Assisted Surface Engineering Processes has been structured to provide assistance and guidance to the engineers, researchers and students in choosing the right process from the galaxy of newer surface engineering techniques using advanced heat sources.
Size effect in structures has been taken into consideration over the last years. In comparison with coatings with micrometer-ranged thickness, nanostructured coatings usually enjoy better and appropriate properties, such as strength and resistance. These coatings enjoy unique magnetic properties and are used with the aim of producing surfaces resistant against erosion, lubricant system, cutting tools, manufacturing hardened sporadic alloys, being resistant against oxidation and corrosion. This book reviews researches on fabrication and classification of nanostructured coatings with focus on size effect in nanometric scale. Size effect on electrochemical, mechanical and physical properties of nanocoatings are presented.
