Designing Change

Over the timespan of just one generation the planet's pace of urbanization has dramatically increased. Through these dynamics and its resulting environmental threats, new challenges have emerged that deeply question the validity of the post-war planning paradigms. Dominant ideologies have been replaced by a problem-solving attitude, increased economic pressure and an urgent quest for evidence. What impact does this have on the work of the urban designer and planner, and how can the profession prepare for the future? 'Designing Change' tries to answer these and many other questions through in-depth conversations with 12 leading practitioners in the field : Christopher Choa (AECOM), Bruno Fort...

Networked Cultures

Based at Goldsmiths, University of London, Networked Cultures is a collaborative venture between artists, architects and urbanists that investigates the cultural transformations underway in Europe by examining the potential and effect of networked spatial practices. Beginning with the hypothesis that networks have become the defining characteristic of twenty-first century social and spatial organization, this publication traces the development of Networked Culture's multifaceted project. Network creativity is traced by following the routes laid out by artists, architects, urbanists, curators and activists. The interrelationship of space and conflict is investigated by mapping contested international regions, by examining the architecture of conflict and by analyzing models of geocultural negotiation. Numerous interviews, urban interventions, public art projects and architectural experiments gathered from the groups, practices or initiatives encountered during the research provide a wealth of illustrative material.

Shared Cities Atlas

The Shared Cities Atlas applies the new, global 'sharing paradigm' in architecture and public sphere to a site-specific situation in seven cities in Central Europe. Mapping current practices of sharing and new fields of action in case studies, it contextualizes the phenomenon in research papers, data, and photography. The ideas of a 'right to the city', of common resources, or 'the urban commons' all of which are in vogue in contemporary architectural discourse illustrate the paradigm shift towards a sharing perspective. In 'sharing cities' the emphasis lies in the right to remake the cities as a form of urban social contract with a specific creative or critical agenda. The Atlas presents creative forms of sharing driven by idealistic positions and collective actions - new approaches to sharing of spaces and architecture, experience and knowledge, data, or collective histories.

"The expansive areas around large airports, affected by noise, infrastructure, and transient forms of architecture, have until now not been researched as a phenomenon. But these noise landscapes are emerging worldwide, often surpassing the neighbouring city in size, and sometimes rivalling it in economic importance. On the basis of eight European case studies (Amsterdam, Zurich, London-Heathrow, Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid and the two Paris airports) this book provides the first account of how these landscapes emerged as the result of technical determinations, what is taking place in them, and how they can be interpreted."--Back cover.

Digital and mobile media play an increasingly important role in everyday urban life. They are changing the way urban life takes shape and how we experience our built environment. This seems a mainly practical matter: thanks to these technologies we can organize our lives more conveniently. But the rise of these 'urban media' also presents us with an important philosophical issue: What do they mean for how the city functions as a community? Employing detailed examples of new media uses as well as historical case studies, Martijn de Waal shows how new technologies, on one level, contribute to the further individualization and liberalization of urban society. There is an alternative future scenario, however, in which digital media construct a new definition of the urban public sphere. In the process they also breathe new life into the classical republican ideal of the city as an open, democratic 'community of strangers'.--Back cover.
