When Meshac Brownlow murders her mother's boyfriend and leaves home, she learns the price you pay when violence is answered with violence. Upon arriving in Nuanz, Tennessee, she makes friends with the mover and shaker, Edna Love, and an inquisitive ten-year-old Grace. The tragic death of Grace's friend, Noah, threatens the harmony of the town. This coincides with the first sit-ins at the nearby Woolworth's lunch counter. The unfolding of the story links with the four seasons of one year. The yearlong trek from revenge to understanding changes Meshac. She finds her answers in Nuanz, Tennessee at the Bluebird Cafe.
Her story "Traveling Musician" tells of her experiences as a musician that travels to nursing homes to sing to the old folks. Her story "Woman Preacher" talks of what the Lord calls woman to do and what women in the congregation today are actually like. Not all the stories in this volume are so serious though. Her story "Bird Talk" is about Brothers Paul and George. George has a pet bird and one day he forgets to cover the bird's cage before going to work, chaos ensues when the neighbors overhear the bird yelling. The moon and meanness. Both have their time to shine or hide in the darkness and wait. I wrestle with meanness most every day. Like old dead George. Some days, it's on me. Other days, it's a reckoning that pops up. The moon keeps me steady. Hesitation spells doom. I nearly waited too long this time. I thought Edna Love knew everything about living and dying. Secrets entice us; they exist everywhere. Some hang over us; some we bury. Some are paybacks doled out piece by piece. But secrets work on us all.
