At the core of his work is a profound and ever-growing knowledge of trees, enabling Nash to engage closely and intuitively with the characteristics of each species. The extensive statements by him in this book provide a unique insight into both his working methods and the thought processes provoked by this extraordinary collaboration. David Nash is represented in many museum collections including the Tate Gallery, London, the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museums, New York, and the Setagaya and Metropolitan Art Museums in Tokyo. He was elected RA in 1999 and awarded an OBE in 2004. The introduction to this illustrated book is by the distinguished art historian and critic, Norbert Lynton, who has known and followed the sculptor's work since the late 1960s.

David Nash at Kew Gardens

This book marks the major exhibition David Nash at Kew Gardens opening in June 2012 through to April 2013. One of the UK's most prolific creators of ecological art, David Nash will produce and exhibit his work across the Gardens, with sculptures, installations, drawings and film in place throughout the Gardens, glasshouses, and exhibition spaces. Nash will work at Kew on a 'wood quarry' from April 2012, creating new pieces for the exhibition using trees from the Gardens that have come to the end of their natural life, and this ongoing work will form part of the exhibition. In a career spanning 40 years, Nash has created over 2,000 sculptures out of wood, many of them monumental in scale. "For over forty years, David Nash has made sculpture almost exclusively in wood. At the core of his work is a profound and ever-growing knowledge of trees, enabling Nash to engage closely and intuitively with the varying characteristics of each species of wood that he uses. The extensive statements by him in this book provide a unique insight into both his working methods and the thought processes provoked by this extraordinary collaboration with trees. Early on, Nash rejected the hitherto unchallenged notion that only unseasoned timber could be used by artists or craftsmen. The direct result of this is that in much of his work, the moment when he has finished carving a piece is only the beg...

Bails and Boardrooms

Bails and Boardrooms is the story of one of Middlesex cricket's best-loved players - a man who used the sport to change his life. David Nash lived and breathed cricket from a very young age. Touted as a future England star at age 15, he eventually found the strains of life as a professional cricketer too great and suffered severe mental-health issues. But the end of Nashy's 20-year Middlesex career proved to be the beginning of something far greater. Determined to make something more of his life, he set out on a journey that would see him build a multi-million-pound business. It was a business that would be his proudest achievement. This book charts Nashy's extraordinary life, from a cricket career of unfulfilled potential to building a business using the lessons he learnt from sport and raising millions for charity. This is a story for anyone who loves cricket or is interested in entrepreneurship. It's a story that shows how hard work, determination and talent can take you almost anywhere.

The art of Paul Nash drew heavily on William Blake, Samuel Palmer and Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and on Nash's close relationship with the poetry of the English countryside, leading to his characterisation as an 'essentially English' artist. But Nash also produced some of the most imaginative responses by a British artist to the thrilling potential of European modernism, experimenting with abstraction and helping to establish the Surrealist movement in Britain.

A Life in Focus

  • Categories: Art

Music legend, photographer, and artist Graham Nash reflects on more than fifty years of an extraordinary life in this extensive collection of personal photographs, paintings, and mixed-media artwork. In this curated collection of art and photography from his personal archive, Graham Nash’s life as a musician and artist unfolds in vivid detail. Best known as a founding member of the Hollies and supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, Graham developed a love of photography from the time he was a child. Inspired by his father, Nash began taking pictures at 10 years old and would go on to take his camera with him ever since—on tour with the Hollies and later CSN and CSNY, among friends at Laurel Canyon and abroad. Many of his photographs depict intimate moments with family and friends, among them Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young. This volume presents these images alongside Nash’s own reflections, telling the story behind the pictures and giving insight into the life of one of the greatest musicians of all time.
