Kew

Over more than two centuries, from the time of George II's wife, Queen Caroline, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew have developed into the remarkable institution we know today. Ray Desmond's authoritative illustrated history traces their 200-year evolution. It highlights the achievements of distinguished garden designers such as 'Capability' Brown and Charles Bridgeman who worked at the gardens and describes the buildings -the creations of eminent architects like William Kent and Decimus Burton -which make Kew so distinctive. Ray Desmond also outlines the very significant contributions Kew has made to scientific development and discovery over the years and underscores the primary objective of the gardens -'the better management of the earth's environment by increasing knowledge and understanding of the plant kingdom.' Ray Desmond has been Chief Librarian and Archivist at Kew and his richly illustrated and informative book is the first history of the gardens to make extensive use of Kew's own archives.

Palace of Palms

'A glorious green adventure story.' Ann Treneman, The Times 'Books of the Year' 'The most enthralling historical book I’ve read this year.' Claire Tomalin, New Statesman 'Books of the year' Daringly innovative when it opened in 1848, the Palm House in Kew Gardens remains one of the most beautiful glass buildings in the world today. Seemingly weightless, vast and yet light, the Palm House floats free from architectural convention, at once monumental and ethereal. From a distance, the crowns of the palms within are silhouetted in the central dome; close to, banana leaves thrust themselves against the glass. To enter it is to enter a tropical fantasy. The body is assaulted by heat, light and ...

The Wild Flora of Kew Gardens: A cumulative checklist from 1759 details all plants that have ever been recorded growing in a wild state within the Gardens or its periphery (including the towpath, Kew Green and Old Deer Park), and all natives cultivated in formal beds or other plantings, either currently or in the past, for which there is reliable documentation, dating back to the first record of 1759. Nearly 2,000 taxa are included, with citation of literature records and herbarium specimens and accompanying colour photographs. The book notes the past and present distribution of wild species within the Gardens, and demonstrates the extent to which the wild flora of the Kew estate has changed over its 250 years.
