There are many different ways to say 'I.' This book examines the ways in which four contemporary women writers (HZl_ne Cixous, Assia Djebar, Gis_le Halimi, and Julia Kristeva) have written their autobiographical 'I' as a plural concept. These women refuse the individual 'I' of traditional autobiography by developing narrative strategies that multiply the voices in their texts. They similarly cast doubt upon current theorizations of the female self in autobiography by questioning the possibility of plural selfhood in narrative and its seemingly cathartic effects. This book looks at first-person accounts of voluntary childlessness by women writing in French. It brings together authors who stake out a new terrain, creating a textual space in which to take ownership of their childlessness and call for new understandings of female identity beyond maternity.
This book explores hybrid memoirs, combining text and images, authored by photographers. It contextualizes this sub-category of life writing from a historical perspective within the overall context of life writing, before taking a structural and cognitive approach to the text/image relationship. While autobiographers use photographs primarily for their illustrative or referential function, photographers have a much more complex interaction with pictures in their autobiographical accounts. This book explores how the visual aspect of a memoir may drastically alter the reader’s response to the work, but also how, in other cases, the visual parts seem disconnected from the text or underused.
This volume examines the ways in which multilingual women authors incorporate several languages into their life writing. It compares the work of six contemporary authors who write predominantly in French. It analyses the narrative strategies they develop to incorporate more than one language into their life writing: French and English, French and Creole, or French and German, for example. The book demonstrates how women writers transform languages to invent new linguistic formations and how they create new formulations of subjectivity within their self-narrative. It intervenes in current debates over global literature, national literatures and translingual and transnational writing, which constitute major areas of research in literary and cultural studies. It also contributes to debates in linguistics through its theoretical framework of translanguaging. It argues that multilingual authors create new paradigms for life writing and that they question our understanding of categories such as "French literature."
Black British writing in the decades after the Windrush generation was marked by a significant change: more immigrant women were published in the UK in these decades than ever before. This book is a collection of essays examining the texts of some of these women writers. Included are essays on Black British women writers, such as Warshan Shire, Eintou Pearl Springer, Beryl Gilroy, Buchi Emecheta, and Barbara Jenkins, which span the literary period from the 1970s to the early 2000s. The essays in this collection propose that these women writers represent the voices of another subgenre of Black British writing, and they are connected – through immigration or temporary migration – to the UK. Yet, they also remain firmly attached to their geographical and cultural origins. The essays included in this collection explore what it means to be a Black British woman writer, and how members of this group were able to conceptualise ‘home’ in their fiction.
