This book explores the scope of reforms and changes in the social protection systems in Latin America that have started at the beginning of the 21st century. It describes how and to what extent changes in social protection systems and social policies have occurred in the region in recent decades. Taking a comparative approach, the volume identifies the triggers for the transformations and how such pressures are received by the welfare regime, or a specific policy sector, to finally yield a given type of reform. The analysis is characterized by the presence of certain factors that explain the development of social protection systems in Latin America, such as economic growth, the consolidation...

Social Policies in Times of Austerity and Populism

Featuring the latest research by Brazilian-based scholars previously inaccessible to an English-speaking audience, this book is a timely, authoritative, multidisciplinary overview of social policies in Brazil during the Temer austerity and the Bolsonaro populist presidencies. The breadth of policies studied herein provides clues on the political agenda, preferences, and strategies during this tumultuous period in Brazil’s history. Divided into four parts, Part I is a conceptualization: it brings basic understanding of Brazilian social policies, explains the trajectory of the Brazil political landscape, including the growth of a populist right-wing movement, the economic crisis and the incr...

The analysis is characterized by the presence of certain factors that explain the development of social protection systems in Latin America, such as economic growth, the consolidation of democratic political regimes, and the region’s Left Turns. The book also examines to what extent common challenges and processes induced by international institutions have led to convergence among countries or welfare regimes, or whether each maintains its own identity.

Family and Borghesia

Two novellas about domestic life, isolation, and the passing of time by one of the finest Italian writers of the twentieth century. Carmine, an architect, and Ivana, a translator, lived together long ago and even had a child, but the child died, and their relationship fell apart, and Carmine married Ninetta, and their child is Dodò, who Carmine feels is a little dull, and these days Carmine is still spending every evening with Ivana, but Ninetta has nothing to say about that. Family, the first of these two novellas from the 1970s, is an examination, at first comic, then progressively dark, about how time passes and life goes on and people circle around the opportunities they had missed, mis...

A Family Vocabulary

Lessico Famigliare is the most popular non-fictional work written by Natalia Ginzburg, one of Italy's most distinguished modern authors. In clear prose, through a series of charming vignettes and sharply observed descriptions, Ginzburg creates a vivid picture of the family in which she grew up. The colourful rhymes, phrases, interjections and idiosyncratic items of vocabulary which were constantly on the lips of the various family members form one of the themes of the book and furnish its title. At the same time Italy's turbulent and ominous political developments during the 1930s and 1940s provide a deftly sketched background to the daily lives and occasional wild adventures of Ginzburg's siblings and parents. The most detailed and affectionate, though mercilessly critical, portrait in the gallery is that of Ginzburg's father, a brilliant research biologist at Turin university, a hot tempered, opiniated, domineering patriarch at home. This book contains a much abridged, slightly edited version of the original Italian text side by side with a fluent English translation.
