"As the events shaping our lives give rise to character, so too do they shape and influence what become our passions and interests. In "My Sister is an Only Child" the author chronicles snapshots of his life and heritage that have informed his passion for engaging in and developing small group ministry within the broader context of the evangelical Christian experience. Always revealing, often humorous, the twelve chapters, a number that is not random but symbolic, each illustrate from true life narratives a dozen guiding principles for the small group leader. What Are You Doing Here?

After my tenure as national president of the Navy League and after I think, perhaps, I have nothing to prove, I was wrong. I am asked to speak at the annual Thursday night dinner of the Submarine Veterans of WWII in November 2008. I came in at the last minute and sat down at the designated table full of submarine veterans and their wives. I was the last one to sit down. The submarine veteran next to me listens while we visit at the table for a few minutes and then turns to me and says, "What are you doing here? You don't know anything about us. A Long Reconstruction

After slavery was abolished, how far would white America go toward including African Americans as full participants in the country's institutions? The Methodist Episcopal Church (the northern branch of the denomination created in an 1844 schism) faced a unique challenge when they went south in the wake of the Civil War. A Long Reconstruction details the denomination's journey with unification and justice. Decades after political Reconstruction ended in 1877, the Church's Black members and their white allies kept up a struggle against racial caste, but they encountered numerous disappointments as the Church, like the country as a whole, sought to restore unity among whites by downplaying issues of race.

The Significance of Free Will

Robert Kane provides a critical overview of debates about free will of the past half century, relating this recent inquiry to the broader history of the free will issue and to vital currents of twentieth century thought. Kane also defends a traditional libertarian or incompatibilist view of free will (one that insists upon the incompatibility of free will and determinism), employing arguments that are both new to philosophy and that respond to contemporary developments in physics and biology, neuro science, and the cognitive and behavioral sciences.
