Dead Men Risen

Dead Men Risen, winner of the prestigious Orwell Prize for Books, is the epic story of a beleaguered British battle group fighting desperately to prevent the Taliban from seizing Afghanistan's Helmand province just as the U.S. Marines arrive to take over. Bestselling author Toby Harnden describes how men from the coal mining valleys and slate quarry villages of Wales found themselves in the most intense combat faced by British troops for a generation. Underequipped and overstretched, the fighting prowess of the Welsh Guards in the killing fields of Sangin and Nawa awed the U.S. Marines. NATO commander General Stanley McChrystal, who was awaiting a response to his urgent request to President ...

Nuclear Physics at Border Lines

This is a collection of invited talks and oral contributions presented by the leading scientists in their fields, summarizing the most recent progress of, and new prospects for, nuclear physics research. It covers a broad range of the recent developments in nuclear physics: reactions between massive nuclei leading to superheavy element formation; radioactive beams and neutron-rich systems; exotic nuclei and nuclear astrophysics; new states of nuclear matter.

Fusion Dynamics At The Extremes, Procs Of The International Workshop

This book deals with the properties and fusion dynamics of very heavy nuclei. It contains the latest experimental results on the formation and fission of superheavy nuclei and on the near-barrier fusion of light exotic nuclei, along with the different theoretical approaches to the description of fusion dynamics and microscopic properties of superheavy nuclei. The book also discusses nuclear collective dynamics and expectations from the use of accelerated beams of radioactive nuclei in fusion reactions.

Nuclear Physics at the Borderlines

This volume contains the lectures presented by invited speakers at the IV La Rlibida International Summer School on Nuclear Physics. This was the IV edition of a summer school organized by our group every three years on topics related to nuclear physics. This Summer School was aimed mainly at young nuclear physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, engaged in research work at predoctoral or recent postdoctoral level. The topics treated in the three previous editions of the School were: "Heavy Ion Collisions", "Theory of Nuclear Structure and Reactions" and "Nuclear As trophysics". This year's School was entitled "Nuclear Physics at the Borderlines". Special emphasis was placed on those topics along which nuclear physics is ex pected to develop in the next few years. The aim of the School was to provide the attendants with an opportunity to get into close contact with experienced researchers and listen to their account of the present state-of-the-art in nuclear physics and the main future lines of development.

Biochemical Pharmacology of Blood and Bloodforming Organs

The subject of this volume is to review chemical agents which affect blood and blood-forming organs. Significant ad- vances made over the past several years in the purification of several hematopoietic growth factors, such as erythro- poietin and colony stimulating factor; the availability of several other growth factors, such as the interleukins which are important in regulating the production of red blood cells, leukocytes, megakaryocytes and platelets are discus- sed. Numerous toxic chemical substances are being produced in our environment which people are exposed todaily causing a suppression of erythropoiesis, myelopoiesis and megakaryo- cytopoiesis. Attempts to evaluate both the therap...
