These two volumes record the scientific and clinical work presented at the VIIth International and 3rd European joint symposium on purine and pyrimidine metabolism in man held at the Bournemouth International Conference Centre, Bournemouth, UK, from 30th June to 5th July 1991. The series of international meetings at three yearly intervals have previously been held initially in 1973 in Israel, then Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, USA and Japan. This Symposium was the fourth in a series which began in Milan, Italy, in 1960. Each meeting has introduced or developed some new concepts in the areas of lipid metabolism and drugs. The meetings have served as a springboard for new ideas which have, between meetings, become accepted and exploited. This meeting has been no exception. Principal among the many new concepts discussed were lipoprotein synthesis and metabolism, apoprotein structure and function, whole body metabolism of cholesterol, and aspects of myocardial and aortic metabolism. The Symposium also included a summary of current thought on management of hyperlipemias and atherosclerosis. Data on more than 30 drugs were introduced and discussed. We have every expectation that the next Symposium will include material which is now only in the formative stage. Substantial progress toward reconciling disparate theories of the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis was recorded in Volume I of this book. the proceedings of an interdisciplinary workshop conference held at Lindau. Germany, April 19-25, 1970. Strong evidence was ad duced that the early stages of arteriosclerosis consist of intimal proliferation similar to that associated with the increase in arteri al size and caliber that characterizes normal growth. The findings described recall a theory proposed by Richard Thoma (Thoma and Kaefer, 1889) of Heidelberg toward the end of the nineteenth century.
