Clustering and Classification, Data Analysis, Data Handling and Business Intelligence are research areas at the intersection of statistics, mathematics, computer science and artificial intelligence. They cover general methods and techniques that can be applied to a vast set of applications such as in business and economics, marketing and finance, engineering, linguistics, archaeology, musicology, biology and medical science. This volume contains the revised versions of selected papers presented during the 11th Biennial IFCS Conference and 33rd Annual Conference of the German Classification Society (Gesellschaft für Klassifikation - GfKl). The conference was organized in cooperation with the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS), and was hosted by Dresden University of Technology, Germany, in March 2009.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Intelligent Data Analysis, IDA-99 held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in August 1999. The 21 revised full papers and 23 posters presented in the book were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of more than 100 submissions. The papers address all current aspects of intelligent data analysis; they are organized in sections on learning, visualization, classification and clustering, integration, applications and media mining.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the joint conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases: ECML PKDD 2008, held in Antwerp, Belgium, in September 2008. The 100 papers presented in two volumes, together with 5 invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 521 submissions. In addition to the regular papers the volume contains 14 abstracts of papers appearing in full version in the Machine Learning Journal and the Knowledge Discovery and Databases Journal of Springer. The conference intends to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in all areas related to machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases. The topics addressed are application of machine learning and data mining methods to real-world problems, particularly exploratory research that describes novel learning and mining tasks and applications requiring non-standard techniques.
This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Data Analysis, IDA 2020, held in Konstanz, Germany, in April 2020. The 45 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 114 submissions. Advancing Intelligent Data Analysis requires novel, potentially game-changing ideas. IDA’s mission is to promote ideas over performance: a solid motivation can be as convincing as exhaustive empirical evaluation.
"This book provides an introduction to statistical pattern recognition theory and techniques. Most of the material presented in this book is concerned with discrimination and classification and has been drawn from a wide range of literature including that of engineering, statistics, computer science and the social sciences. This book is an attempt to provide a concise volume containing descriptions of many of the most useful of today's pattern processing techniques including many of the recent advances in nonparametric approaches to discrimination developed in the statistics literature and elsewhere. The techniques are illustrated with examples of real-world applications studies. Pointers are also provided to the diverse literature base where further details on applications, comparative studies and theoretical developments may be obtained"--Page [xv].
Some secrets run deeper than blood… Long ago, a battle was fought against the dark Etheria, creatures who wanted control of the world. Now, Etheria are kept hidden by Trucekeepers. They’re just myths… or are they? Hannah is a frustrated sixteen-year-old—fed up with school, her diabetes and desperate to find somewhere she belongs. Daegan is a Trucekeeper—a fearless warrior with a dark past, sworn to keep the existence of mythical creatures a secret. After Daegan saves Hannah from a vicious zburător, Hannah discovers the existence of Etheria, mythical creatures from all around the world, hidden by the Trucekeepers for centuries. As Daegan trains her to become a Trucekeeper, Hannah rubs shoulders with Etheria, learns how to cast magic and finds somewhere she can finally call home… until she discovers that her mysterious past is the key to a war that could destroy the Trucekeepers and her new home forever.
In Beyond 9 to 5, Sarah Norgate investigates the psychological, social, and cultural influences that affect the way we regard and are affected by time. Using everyday examples from around the world, her intriguing analysis unravels both the mental and biological mysteries of our relationships with time and provides a clear understanding of the links among behavior, brain, and genes. Norgate begins by musing on the origins of our obsession with punctuality; the conflicting practices of rushing and taking things slow; economy-driven proverbs from highly industrialized nations-Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today-and how they differ from beliefs and attitudes in more rural areas; ...
