This book comprises of fourteen specially commissioned essays on the theme of drug abuse and the control of drug use in Britain. It analyses and appraises the two strands of that which has been termed the 'British system' of control, namely, prescription to, and rehabilitation of, registered users and enforcement action against illegal users. It also examines issues of contemporary relevance in the drug control debate, including the economics of drug control, drug education, the impact of AIDS, new trends in legislation and decriminalisation.

This book covers organized crime groups, empirical studies of organized crime, criminal finances and money laundering, and crime prevention, gathering some of the most authoritative and well-known scholars in the field. The contributions to this book are new chapters written in honor of Professor Dick Hobbs, on the occasion of his retirement. They reflect his powerful influence on the study of organized crime, offering a novel perspective that located organized crime in its socio-economic context, studied through prolonged ethnographic engagement. Criminal Markets and Mafia Proceeds
This book estimates the proceeds of crime and mafia revenues for different criminal markets such as sexual exploitation, drugs, illicit cigarettes, loan sharking, extortion racketeering, counterfeiting, illicit firearms, illegal gambling and illicit waste management. It is the first time that scholars have adopted detailed methodologies to ensure the highest reliability and validity of the estimation. Overall, estimated proceeds of crime amount to € 22.8 billion: 1.5% of the Italian GDP. Of this, up to € 10.7 billion (0.7 of the GDP) may be attributable to the Italian mafias. Strengthening OLAF, the European Anti-Fraud Office
OLAF (the European Anti-Fraud Office) was established by the Commission in 1999, following the collapse of its predecessor UCLAF, and its role is to protect the financial interests of the EU and to fight fraud and corruption within the EU's institutions or within individual EU member states. Its efficiency and effectiveness are currently under review, and the Commission has brought forward a proposal designed to improve OLAF's operational efficiency, improve information flows and protect the rights of individuals under investigation. The Committee's report judges that this proposal is premature and unlikely to enhance OLAF's accountability or independence. It also notes that the future of OLAF has become entwined with the debate over the post of European Public Prosecutor, and that the Commission should not allow this to distract its focus from examining how OLAF can be made more effective in the fight against fraud.
