Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art

  • Categories: Art

Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art explores the ways in which artists have sought to explain their world in terms of an alternate reality, drawn from imagination, the subconscious, poetry, nature, myth, and religion. Endless Enigma takes as its point of departure Alfred H. Barr Jr.’s legendary 1936 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism, which not only introduced these movements to the American public, but also placed them in a historical and cultural context by situating them with artists from earlier centuries. Presenting works from the twelfth century to the present day, this catalogue is organized into six themes—Monsters & Dem...

Hall Family History

This book documents the de Aula and later Hall family, along their journey through time. The Halls have been “pillars of society” since ancient times, providing family members and their community with a vision of spirituality and purpose. Their willingness to embark on a journey to a new world indicates their courage and principles. They number among those unsung hero’s who go unrecognized or honored during their lifetimes, and are sometimes labeled troublemakers among the governing powers. They are made to suffer for their beliefs, and only after death do they receive their reward. They are people with a deep realization of truth. The examples they, and the messages they offer no doubt have a lasting effect on those who approach them, instilling in them a greater value and purpose.

No one knows heaven’s paradise, but earthly paradises created by mortals may mirror the paradise of the afterlife. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan crafted paradises with Diwan-e-Khas in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra. Enthralled by the splendor, he inscribed a Persian couplet on the Diwan’s arches: ‘If there is paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.’ The title and contents of this book echo the crux of this couplet. This travelogue explores the author's five-decade journey through European monarchs' architectural marvels of paradisiacal proportions and their eminence relative to South Asian architectural resurgence under Shah Jahan in the 17th century CE.
