This book offers a fresh report and interpretation of what is happening at the intersection of two great contemporary movements: the rapid growth of higher education worldwide and the rise of world Christianity. It features on-site, evaluative studies by scholars from Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. Christian Higher Education: A Global Reconnaissance visits some of the hotspots of Christian university development, such as South Korea, Kenya, and Nigeria, and compares what is happening there to places in Canada, the United States, and Europe, where Christian higher education has a longer history. Very little research until now has examined the scope and direction of Christian higher education throughout the world, so this volume fills a real gap.
Pentecostal Higher Education
This book presents a theological and missiological argument for pentecostals to engage more forcefully in higher education by expanding and renewing their commitment toward operating their own colleges and universities. The volume’s first part describes past and present developments within higher education, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of both pentecostal and (post)secular institutions. The second part highlights the future potential of pentecostal higher education, which is enriched by a Spirit-empowered and mission-minded spirituality that focuses on forming the hearts, heads, and hands of students. Pentecostals increasingly desire to influence all spheres of society, an endeavor that could be amplified through a strengthened engagement in higher education, particularly one that encompasses a variety of institutions, including a pentecostal research university. In developing such an argument, this research is both comprehensive and compelling, inviting pentecostals to make a missional difference in the knowledge-based economies that will characterize the twenty-first century.

Sola Scriptura in Asia

This issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology presents a selection of papers from the July 2017 conference, “Where is Protestantism in Latin America Headed? A Future-Oriented, Multidisciplinary Vision 500 Years after the Reformation.” This event was cosponsored by IAPCHE, the FTL, and CETI in Lima, Peru in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. It was a look back, with gratitude to God, for positive contributions in Latin America that can be traced to the Reformation. It was also a sobering recognition of the shortcomings of that renewal movement. Even more importantly, the scholars and practitioners involved proposed faithful steps for Protestant churches in Latin America to take in the foreseeable future. Some forty individuals gathered to explore many angles of the Reformation’s legacy in Latin America, including history, human rights, social justice, aesthetics and literature, church education, ecology and economic sustainability, and communication. Great Awakenings
This book is an engaging look at spiritual awakenings that have happened in the church throughout history. It examines how these extraordinary movements of God translate into the larger cultural analysis of today. Spiritual awakenings have refreshed the people of God from the very origins of the church. What about these past movements can be instructive for the church today? Can we expect God’s awakening presence in our day? These questions brought about the “Surprising Work of God Conference” in the fall of 2015 in which speakers traced awakening movements from the Old and New Testaments to the present day. Great Awakenings represents the culmination of this conference as the collected works of notable speakers. Chapters address questions about spiritual awakenings through historical, theological, and sociological lenses. They look at the events that precipitated these awakenings, evaluating whether their causes were purely religious or otherwise, and finally suggest what about the awakenings is normative for the church today.
