An Ode to Salonika
Through the poetry of Bouena Sarfatty (1916-1997), An Ode to Salonika sketches the life and demise of the Sephardi Jewish community that once flourished in this Greek crossroads city. A resident of Salonika who survived the Holocaust as a partisan and later settled in Canada, Sarfatty preserved the traditions and memories of this diverse and thriving Sephardi community in some 500 Ladino poems known as coplas. The coplas also describe the traumas the community faced under German occupation before the Nazis deported its Jewish residents to Auschwitz. The coplas in Ladino and in Renée Levine Melammed's English translation are framed by chapters that trace the history of the Sephardi community in Salonika and provide context for the poems. This unique and moving source provides a rare entrée into a once vibrant world now lost.

Carbohydrates: Structure and Function
The Biochemistry of Plants: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume 3: Carbohydrates: Structure and Function is a compilation of contributions dealing with studies in the area of plant carbohydrates. The articles in this volume are grouped into three sections. The first section deals with topics concerning the monosaccharides and their derivatives found in plants. The integration and control of vital pathways concerned with hexose phosphate metabolism, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis; the metabolism of monosaccharide derivatives; and the formation of sugar nucleotides and their various transformations to the many novel sugar derivatives normally found in plant cell walls and complex carbohydrates are discussed in this section. The second part deals with the occurrence, biosynthesis, and transport of disaccharides and oligosaccharides. The final section of the volume is concerned with the occurrence, structure, and biosynthesis of simple and complex polysaccharides and glycoconjugates associated with cell walls and membranes. Biochemists and botanists will find the book a great reference material.

Deportados y olvidados
Entre los millones de enemigos políticos y raciales del Tercer Reich que sufrieron la deportación, los trabajos forzados y la eliminación tras el estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se encontraban miles de españoles exiliados de la Guerra Civil y también de origen sefardita que recalaron en Mathausen, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, Neuengamme, Buchenwald o Dachau, además de una amplia red de subcampos.
Hasta hace poco, los datos oficiales contabilizaban una cifra de muertos españoles en los campos nazis imprecisas y a todas luces incompleta. Este libro estudia la documentación de las fuerzas aliadas, de los propios internos de los campos, de distintos recintos de la red concentracionaria y de administraciones como la francesa y la española, la mayoría poco tratada o inédita hasta el momento para el caso español. El resultado es una obra que recoge un nuevo listado de víctimas que amplía y actualiza sustancialmente las cifras manejadas hasta el momento por la historiografía española. Un trabajo de consulta y referencia indispensable para nuestro conocimiento del destino de los españoles bajo la máquina de guerra nazi y en el Holocausto.
