The Underground Church
Since the 1970s, liberal American Catholics have sustained a Reform Movement to counteract the conservative drift of the Vatican and to preserve and expand on the reforms of Vatican II. This book draws on a range of theory to analyze and interpret this movement, which is intent on creating a model of church, that examples Vatican II's open, receptive attitude toward the modern world. In response to backlash from church officials, the movement has increasingly abandoned effort to reform Roman Catholicism from within, and has moved in a sectarian direction by creating independent worship communities. The movement faces a precarious future due to its rapidly aging membership and the unstable nature of its newly-formed communities.

Oncologic Surgical Emergencies
This book will offer a practical guide for the surgical management of oncologic emergencies, that pose great challenges to both surgeons and oncologists. Combining the knowledge of experienced surgeons and oncologists, it describes the experience gained from daily life into a tertiary hospital. Every chapter will be focused on radical treatment of primary tumors, metastatic disease and palliation, and will include an “Highlight” section with 4-5 key messages at the beginning of each chapter, whereas at the end a flow-diagram will be employed to summarize the subject discussed topic. Every chapter will be written by at least two authors, including a surgeon and an oncologist, to guarantee a 360 degrees analysis of each topic. This work will benefit both surgeons and oncologists: surgeons will found in it a step to step practical tool that helps the decision making process, while oncologists will find interesting indications about how and when to involve a general surgeon into the management of an oncologic emergent condition.
My Wartime Italian Roots and My Canadian Dream
During the second war, the town of Pettorano sul Gizio was very close to the action because of its proximity to the Gustav Line, a defensive position estabilished by the Germans to slow down the advancing Allied forces. Pettorano’s geographic coordinates and its major transportation corridors, motivated the Germans army to set up a post in this locale. As the results of location and the German army presence, the town is rich in war history, including the evacuation of 4,000 souls when a major offensive was imminent. Some of the evacuees scattered into neighbouring outskirts, but most of them fl ed into the mountains near the village, seeking refuge. I have also added another story, which I share with at least 3,000 citizen of Pettorano: the immigrant experience.The war and its devastation on the economy made imperative the necessity to leave the homeland in search of a better life. Many of us came to Canada. It is from here that I recall the journey and pen these words and comment on the events so that our children’s and grandchildren’s generation might appreciate the sacrifi ces endured by their ancestors.
