Sound Theology
Sound Theology: Pipe Organ Power Plays among Protestants, Pulpits, Professors, and Peers surveys the liturgical soundscape during and after the Reformation with regard to the use of instruments in worship in general, and the (dis)use of the pipe organ specifically. Why were some sounds considered sacred, and others profane? The book tells the story of first-generation reformers’ approaches to shaping their new Reformed worship services in regard to music, and the resulting debates, power plays, and ultimate compromises. Sound Theology also examines second-generation Protestants’ affirmations, adaptations, and reversals. Sound Theology: A Reader is a companion volume of curated primary source material. Together, Sound Theology’s two volumes tell a little-known, but colorful and foundational story that shaped Reformed worship for centuries to come.
Calvinism and the Making of the European Mind
Calvinism must be assigned a significant place among the forces that have shaped modern European culture. Even now, despite its history of religious fragmentation and secularization, Europe continues to bear the marks of a pervasive Calvinist ethos. The character of that ethos is, however, difficult to pin down. In this volume, many of the traditional scholarly conundrums about the relationship between Calvinism and the cultural history of Europe are revisited and re-investigated, to see what new light can be shed on them. For example, how has the ethos of Calvinism, or more broadly the Reformed tradition, affected economic thinking and practice, the development of the sciences, views on religious toleration, or the constitution of European polities? In general, what kind of transformations did Calvinism’s distinct spirituality bring about? Such questions demand painstaking and detailed scholarly work, a fine sample of which is published in this volume.
A Companion to Reformed Orthodoxy
This book reflects and comprises the latest in research on the history and theology of Reformed Orthodoxy (± 1550-1750) and is at the same time a work in progress, which makes this volume in the Companion series unique. On the Church
This anthology of key essays and speeches presents Kuyper’s thoughts on the church. Included are selections from Kuyper’s doctoral dissertation on the theology of John Calvin and John a Lasco; various treatises and sermons such as the Twofold Fatherland and Address on Missions; and selections from Kuyper’s larger works on the church, such as Kuyper’s commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism. The centerpiece will be Kuyper’s programmatic statement Tract on the Reformation of the Churches, which takes a unique approach to ecclesiology.
