Star Tales

Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, award-winning astronomy writer and popularizer, has been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Ta...

A Catalogue of 9766 Stars in the Southern Hemisphere, for the Beginning of the Year 1750, From the Observations of the Abbe de Lacaille Made at the Cape of Good Hope in the Years 1751 and 1752

This astronomical catalogue is a comprehensive mapping of stars located in the Southern Hemisphere. The observations made by de Lacaille in the mid-18th century at Cape of Good Hope in South Africa helped discover and establish newly named constellations and provided astronomers with an essential tool when studying celestial bodies. The catalogue provides the coordinates, brightness, and luminosity of more than 9,700 stars in the southern region of the sky. It is an indispensable resource for both professional and amateur astronomers. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work is in the "pu...

Précis of the Lectures on Architecture

Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.
