In the ancient Mediterranean world, the sea was an essential domain for trade, cultural exchange, communication, exploration, and colonisation. In tandem with the lived reality of this maritime space, a parallel experience of the sea emerged in narrative representations from ancient Greece and Rome, of the sea as a cultural imaginary. This collection of papers, in honour of Sinclair Hood, ranges across the archaeology and history of Knossos. The first ten chapters progress from the Neolithic to the Roman period; the last three return to the Bronze Age settlement and specific important aspects of it. As researchers bring their analytic skills to bear on contemporary archaeological tourism, they find that it is as much about the present as the past. Many new and fruitful avenues of investigation open up when scholars consider forgery as a creative act rather than a crime. We invited authors to contribute work without imposing any restrictions beyond a willingness to consider new approaches to the subject of ancient fakes, forgeries and questions of authenticity.
