This new issue of DELUS: The Journal of the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies, entitled " Chasing Water," brings together contributions on the topic of water. Nine essays invite us to explore different manifestations of the element. DELUS uses the term "chasing" to highlight the role of water in shaping and sustaining landscapes and urban environments, and the ongoing efforts to direct its course. From the transformation of English moorland and marshland to intricate irrigation systems in the Mediterranean and to the ecological impact of water harvesting schemes in Chile and Australia, each contribution explores the ways in which water is tracked, obstructed, or contained. "Chasing Water" vividly reflects the contradictory challenge of capturing, storing, and distributing the element in a world where it is theoretically abundant, but in many places inaccessible. DELUS is an annual publication that explores emerging themes, topics and methods from landscape and urban studies. Founded in 2022 by the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS) at ETH Zurich, it brings academic knowledge to a broader audience.
Reflecting on the relationship between artists and their audiences, this book examines how artists have presented themselves publicly through interviews and sought to establish a critical voice for themselves. Considering the interview as a form of cultural production, contributors explore the criteria for determining the artist interview as a distinct field of research in relation to other cultural fields. Structured in four parts, ‘History and Historiography’, ‘Subverting the Biographical Model’, ‘Interviews as Practice’ and ‘Materiality and Technology’, the book takes an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses the fields of art history, fine art, oral history, curating, media studies and museum conservation. By theorising the artist interview as a form of cultural production and embracing it as a co-constructed critical practice, this volume aims to show and encourage an approach to art history which dismantles old hierarchies in favour of valuing dialogue and collaboration. Performing a political identity usually involves more than just casting a vote. An original, innovative, and timely study on the cultural history of Cyprus under British rule, offering a new interpretative framework for studying the island's colonial past. The book focuses on the often-overlooked cultural dimensions of the island's colonial experience and demonstrates the crucial role culture played in shaping its historical trajectory and future. This is the first volume to explore various aspects of the island's cultural life from 1878, when it transitioned from Ottoman to British rule, until the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960. It features a series of thematic chapters by female authors, focusing on photography, architecture, literature, theatre, art and collecting, cultural policy, advertising, fashion, antiquities and archaeology, public gardens, and sports clubs. Individual chapters bring to light previously unpublished source material in Greek and English, both written and visual, from state and private archives. Using cross-disciplinary analytical tools from fields such as imperial and colonial history, politics, cultural studies, and media and communication studies, the authors provide new insights.
Cyprus, the idyllic “island of Aphrodite,” is better known as a site of conflict and division between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, rather than for its film production. Constandinides and Papadakis work to rectify this dearth of information by discussing the ouevre of filmmakers engaging with the island's traumatic legacies: anti-colonial struggles, post-colonial instability, interethnic conflict, external interventions and war. Starting with the cinema of the 1960s, when the island became a republic, the collection focuses on the recent decades of filmmakers exploring issues of conflict, memory, identity, nationalism, migration and gender, as well as the work of filmmakers who chose to cooperate across the ethnic divide. Cypriot Cinemas utilizes a methodology that engages all necessary perspectives for an illuminating critical discussion: historical, theoretical and comparative (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot films in relation to regional film cultures/practices). While the volume develops a discussion based on the reading of the political in Cypriot films, it also looks at other film cultures and debates such as (s)exploitation films and transnational cinema.
