Online Worlds: Convergence of the Real and the Virtual

William Sims Bainbridge Virtual worlds are persistent online computer-generated environments where people can interact, whether for work or play, in a manner comparable to the real world. The most prominent current example is World of Warcraft (Corneliussen and Rettberg 2008), a massively multiplayer online game with 11 million s- scribers. Some other virtual worlds, notably Second Life (Rymaszewski et al. 2007), are not games at all, but Internet-based collaboration contexts in which people can create virtual objects, simulated architecture, and working groups. Although interest in virtual worlds has been growing for at least a dozen years, only today it is possible to bring together an international team of highly acc- plished authors to examine them with both care and excitement, employing a range of theories and methodologies to discover the principles that are making virtual worlds increasingly popular and may in future establish them as a major sector of human-centered computing.

Handbook of Human Centric Visualization

Visualizations are visual representations of non-visual data. They are produced for people to interact with and to make sense of the underlying data. Rapid advances in display technology and computer power have enabled researchers to produce visually appealing pictures. However, the effectiveness of those pictures in conveying the embedded information to end users has not been fully explored. Handbook of Human Centric Visualization addresses issues related to design, evaluation and application of visualizations. Topics include visualization theories, design principles, evaluation methods and metrics, human factors, interaction methods and case studies. This cutting-edge book includes contrib...

How do national cultures and education systems affect children's musical learning?Combining information, analysis and evaluation from fifteen countries, Musical Development and Learning answers these questions. This unique survey, written by an international team of experts, not only provides a global perspective on musical education and development but also a comparative framework designed to enable teachers, parents and researchers to learn from practice and policy in other countries.

Animal Spatial Cognition

The “Cognitive Map” (Tolman, 1948) is a key notion in spatial processing studies. It refers to high level spatial representations. Although widely used, this term remains ambiguous. The aim of this book is two-fold: (1) to examine the most noteworthy studies (in laboratory settings) which have contributed during the last five decades to a better understanding of animal spatial representations; (2) to provide some hints for future research. Spatial tests designed by psychologists are useful tools for understanding the brain substrates of spatial memory. Conversely, brain treatments allow us to analyse the complex psychological mechanisms underlying spatial orientation. Within this interdisciplinary context, it is extremely important to take stock of a notion used (and sometimes misused) in cognitive neurosciences. Request Inspection Copy

The authors, who are acknowledged experts in their field, explain the basics carefully and engagingly without the over-simplification often found in introductory textbooks, at the same time providing the reader with insights into current thinking. Essential Biological Psychology is an accessible, well-il...

Keeping Them Off The Streets

Keeping Them Off The Streets is a remarkable account of over forty years’ experience in the field of youth work. It recounts not just personal experience but also reflects on the policy changes that have accompanied successive governments and new developments in sociological research, their efficacy and implications. It tracks Tim Caley’s career from Sheffield housing estate through the challenges of delivering a successful youth service at a County Level, the world of the Ofsted inspector, and finally a much sought-after private consultant in the youth services field. The book provides a new and original perspective on its subject matter. It combines sound research and intellectual anal...
